DD wants to wear makeup

DD has just turned 12 and wants to start wearing makeup. I want to let her but I don't know how much is too much for a girl her age. She told me apparently the girls in her class wear full on foundation, contour, bold eyeshadow looks, eyebrows, all designer labels but I really do not want to a) let her plaster on so much makeup aged 12 and b) spend God knows how much on a sodding lipstick.

How much makeup should I let her wear? And has anyone got some good cheap-ish brands that are still good that I can get her/she can get herself?

Well that wouldn't be allowed at my DSD school.

Primark is good for cheap makeup.

She told me apparently the girls in her class...
Oldest trick in the book. All the other girls will be saying in same.
Let her go into school plastered in make-up and you'll be the one in the wrong.

I would get her the basics- mascara, light eyeshadows and a lip gloss to begin with

GreenTulips · 31/08/2017 10:15

I'd let her

Most of it will be for practice - the eyebrow makeup is a big grand here and takes a lot of practice - same with contouring

What do you mean by "wants to start wearing makeup"? Do you mean everyday or just for special occasions?

If the former, I'd say no and I'm a bit of make up addict myself. If just for special occasions, I'd get her a neutral eyeshadow, possibly eye liner (although it's hard to put on well so maybe no), mascara and a lightish lipstick.

Unless she has a problem with acne that needs covering up, I wouldn't let her wear foundation. I tell my daughter that I wear foundation to make my skin look younger but there is no way she needs it as her skin is still super smooth and clear.

I think at that age, most girls are wearing some. Different schools have different rules about what can be worn at school.
My DD just turned 13, is not allowed make up at school. She has been wearing it outside school for about a year - although really if going out with friends/special occasions - not all the time.
She does a lot of dancing which needs full, heavy makeup and I think has rather put her off wearing too much. She uses tinted moisturiser rather than full foundation, light eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss/balm. Mostly Boots own ranges (17 or naturals) so not too expensive.

I doubt she'll wear makeup every day - but has clumsily phrased it that way.

She's hardly going to have time and patience to do it every morning anyway - makeup need practice

Set some boundaries, not at school but at weekends outside the house? There are some nice YouTube videos to help teach the skills and different styles for her to experiment. Keep it simple and also explain the importance of not wearing it to allow skin to breathe, less acne and cleanliness.

Superdrug makeup revolution is cheap and good.
