Nine year old DD has vaginal bleeding today

DD has had stomach cramps since yesterday and had a 50p size patch of bright red blood in her pants today. She is quite big for her age (she is almost 9 and a half) but has only been showing signs of breast buds for a few months, has no pubic hair and has not had any discharge up till now. She has been incredibly moody for months though. I think my periods started when I was about 11 or 12 so it seems very early for her to be starting.

Having consulted Dr Google this evening now she is in bed, I am worried that things are happening out of kilter and am especially worried that she might only grow another 2-3 cm in height. She is about 130cm tall at the moment. I am also worried about the bright red blood - should it not have been more of a brownish colour to start with? I've checked with her and she hasn't had any accident that might have caused any injury inside.

I think I am going to contact the GP tomorrow but does anyone have any advice/experience in the meantime?

Not necessarily re the colour. My sister started at nine. With regards to the stomach cramps, breastfeeding buds and recent mood swings it does seem likely that it's her periods starting.

My sister didn't only grow 2-3cm, she's about 5 foot 2 as an adult size five feet.

Think a visit to the gp is in order. from what I can remember it's the medication they offer to stop it that can stunt growth.

Sounds like she's started her period. Have you given her towels and shown her how to change etc?

9 is completely within the normal age range for starting.

Could be hymen. Any jumping around, horse riding, cycling etc?

Breast buds and cramps point to period though.

Blood wouldn't necessarily be brown.

Agree with pp seems like she has got her period. My dd started hers at 9.9 so it's uncommon. Have a chat with her and make sure she has pads etc. Another point to mention my dd was quite small at 9 but now at 17 she is 5ft 11ins

Yes, she is in bed with a hot water bottle having had lots of cuddles and a warm bath and we have had the towel talk and demo. I did introduce the subject of periods to her a few weeks ago (thankfully!) but did not imagine for a minute we would be dealing with it so soon.

I did wonder about hymen breaking but there doesn't seem to have been anything happen to have caused this.

I really feel for you both. My DD is 8 and starting to show physical signs of pubity as well as moodiness. Ive done my own research and it seems that the age is lowering.

CassandraAusten · 22/05/2016 09:19

Yes that's right, the average age is younger than it used to be.

maybebabybee · 22/05/2016 09:21

Mine was bright red when it started. It's normal.

nulgirl · 22/05/2016 09:29

Sounds like her period. They do seem to start younger than we did. I'm waiting for my dd to start hers and think it will be within the next few months. She is almost 10 but has breast buds, hair under her arms and her mood swings are definitely more adolescent. She swims a lot so I'm worried how having periods will affect her.

I also worry about how she will handle it at school. Have you spoken to her about it and given her a kit for tomorrow?

My DD started with breast buds and BO at just 8, now at nearly 11 has huge boobs (where did they come from? Hmm I'm a 34A!) fully grown pubic hair, hair in armpits. The whole lot. Been having discharge and mood swings for over a year, but no period yet. I thought she would be an early started but, no. She's very tall 5'3 and slim btw.

A friend's DD seemed to do it all backwards. Period first, aged 9, and now at 10 starting with the other signs.
