Starting periods, can you tell when it might happen?

DD just turned 11. She had permature adrenarche (when the adrenals kick in before puberty proper) which gave her some body hair v early, but at the time she had to have scans etc, and everything else was age appropriate. I started my periods very late (nearly 16) as did my mother (16), so I hoped it was all a few years away, but recently, e.g. in the last term, she has put weight on. She's always been very thin, at the bottom centile for weight, and although still a very slim girl, she is more padded than she has ever been, and her general body shape is changing. She also has the mood swings from hell......she is tallish for her age too. (4' 10")

I've talked to her about periods, she is well informed, but she is worrying about what will happen if she starts in school. I've suggested she tells a teacher but she thinks that is too embarrassing. I've also suggested that she has a little "emergency pack" in her bag, in case it happens in school but she was quite ambivalent about that. None of her friends have started or, look as though they might, so she is worrying about being the first and dealing with it at school and socially.

I remember reading that girls tend to start their periods when they hit a rough weight of 7 stone, is that true? It was true for me, but that may be coincidence! (she is five stone 5) I wondered if there were clues that periods might be likely to start, as I'm worried about her starting in school and getting in a state about it. I'm also really rather hoping that it is a couple of years away at least.

Baressentials · 22/01/2016 11:44

Thanks Dancer I have my moments of getting it right not many Though DD clearly didn't think I was getting it right when she got her next period and she realised breakfast out and a day off school wasn't happening! Grin

DD1 started at 11 in P7 (is that year 8 in english money?). DD2 is now in P7 but still 10. Some signs and suspect she won't be long either.

Grin bare

My oldest dd started her periods at 11 years 3 months. She had been developing since about 10 and I had sort of expected her to start as I started mine at 11 (not always reliable I know).

However dd2 started developing breasts at about 11 then pubic hair about a year later. She has only just started her periods at nearly 13.

Not sure the 7 stone thing is true.

No idea re the 7 stone thing. Though I clearly remember being weighed in class when I was in 4th year (now yr 6) 31 years ago I remember being mortified that I was the heaviest at 6stone yet I had had my periods for nearly a year.

My older sister (by 3 years) started her periods about a month before me. If I remember correctly mum started at about 11. Sadly her mum (my nan) wouldn't accept it so my mum had to steal her older sisters bras (had to take off the bra before getting home from school) and wedge her pants full of tissue when she got her period- thankgod things have moved on!

It's not actual weight that is the trigger but body fat percentage (think it's around 17%)

SirVixofVixHall · 23/01/2016 16:31

Periods at nine, oh that is so little. Its a lot to deal with at primary isn't it? The body fat percentage thing confuses me, as wouldn't that mean that more padded girls start earlier? Not sure that was true of my friendship group, hard to remember! I was thin as a pin when mine started, but as I was almost 16 then I suppose it was about time. Although height does seem to factor in too somehow.
I've just bought her one of the little teen packs suggested above, it comes with towels and tampons, it took me ages to get the hang of tampons and I've never really liked them. Probably due to having lighter periods, and being of the age when toxic shock syndrome was just getting exposed as a danger. I was paranoid about changing the tampon regularly but having to remove a dry-ish tampon is the most horrible feeling! So other than for swimming or going out dancing, I've stuck with towels. So she's not seen one before, and thinks they are weird..! We just looked at the little pack together, she has mixed feelings about it all, so I've said I'll leave it in the bathroom. I imagine tampons are more for teenagers anyway, rather than for first few periods. I am leaving her to look through the pack when she feels ready, and I said I could pop it into her school bag with spare pants etc, if/when she wants.

Is that not why they say girls are starting earlier though, because they are getting bigger at a younger age?

mummc2 · 25/01/2016 16:49

Which was the biggest sign do you believe hair growth or body fat? My Dd 11 is probably stage 2 on the tanner scale for breasts but has no hair anywhere. About 6 mths ago we had to buy panty liners for discharge but this went within a month.
