11 year olds and cinema on their own

Is it okay for a group of 11 year old girls (about 4 or them) to go to the cinema on their own without an adult? I'll be having a coffee in the coffee shop outside the cinema so they're not entirely on their own should anything happen to make them need to leave early (emergency, film break down etc).

Only if they will behave themselves.

it's fine

BellaVita · 21/07/2012 08:48

At 11 of course it is okay.

It's fine. They won't even really be on their own. It will be good for them.

Unfortunately it's time for them to learn a little independence and thus is a good compromise.

AppleCrumbleAndFish · 21/07/2012 08:50

Yes it's fine. My only concern would be that they would annoy the other cinema goers, so I'd make sure they knew to keep their volume down.

I took my ten year old and her friend last week. I saw them to their seats then went home. I got back just as they were coming out. They were fine.

A little independence? At 11???????

TheOneWithTheHair · 21/07/2012 09:07

Yes they won't be on their own because the op is right their. They will be off to secondary school in September and they're not off to a night club. Why not?

TheOneWithTheHair · 21/07/2012 09:07

Oh ok. I'll back down now. Thanks Ruby. I wondered if I was being unreasonable for a minute. Grin

It would have been good if I'd got it right IMST!

My 10 year old DS has just gone on "survival camp", he'll be building a shelter to sleep in tonight, and making a fire to cook his dinner on.
Bet the cinema looks quite tame now eh?

norahjonesisnotmyname · 21/07/2012 09:23

Thanks, I did think it would be fine but just wanted to check. It is a small complex in a small size town so feels safe, it will be during the afternoon so not an evening either. I will have a little chat before they go in about respecting other viewers and also stranger danger but they are sensible girls so I don't expect they will be a nuisance to others.

They'll love it.

11 is the time for a little independence. My DD2 has had some walking to the village shop and the odd bit of cycling.

But we live in the middle of nowhere, except the somewhat narrow pavement less walk to the shop there isn't any where to go.

Plans afoot, for swimming and shopping trips for just this reason.

My 14y doesn't get much independence simply because she doesn't really do friends, so she's no one to go with.
(She does have a couple of friends, but they also live in the middle of nowhere and tend to "play" at their place or be dropped and collected from the cinema - zero public transport.)

It doesn't matter as DD1 is a very sensible practical soul. I strongly suspect you could leave her in the centre of London and she'd get back.

DD2 needs friends and panics, independence practice is needed.
