Liz Earle vs Clinique vs Organic spot treatment products

My DD is nearly 12yo and has started having spots on her forehead and nose.
I am debating on which one of these products to start her on. Have you any views on what are the best natural products for a skin care regime at this age?
I find most products from Boots a bit too harsh or they just don't work.
Also do you think facials are suitable at this age?
Please help :)

I would agree that skin products can be harsh whatever age you are, but particularly for young skin. Simple is quite a gentle skin product, but always moisturise after using any sort of spot product. Disencourage foundation if she wants to wear it. Toothpaste is a good quick treatment (just pop it each spot overnight and wash it off the morning after), but can leave skin dry so baby lotion for the day after.

I suggest that she uses steam and lemon juice, no chemicals needed then. Just get a bowl of hot water, she leans over it with a towel over her head for a couple of minutes, she'll need to come up for breath as it is a bit suffocating. Then once her pores are opened, apply fresh lemon juice to her face. As it drys it will feel tight, sticky and a little itchy. Wash it off in cold water. The improvement is fast as lemon is a natural antiseptic and if it's done regularly you really see a difference. :-)

Hope this helps.

Very interested as my 12 yr old grand daughter has a very spotty forehead, at side of nose and on chin. She doesn't seem the slightest bit bothered at the moment, but I think she will in a year or so, and it worries me because she had such lovely skin.

My dil and her sister both suffered from acne and my dil apparently was really upset and embarrassed and she doesn't want A to go through that, so at the moment she is just making sure A keeps her face clean. I think though that she is over compensating because there are products that can help. Is that really true about the toothpaste? She says if A gets upset she will take her to the GP because apparently you can get antibiotic cream. Someone on here posted a while ago, but i have forgotten the name. I like the idea of natural products. I bought some T tree products but I'm not sure if my dil used them on A. She said she had bought clearasil but not sure how effective that is.

Also think the lemon juice sounds good. Mind I am in a difficult position because I am not the mum! I get on very well with my dil so we can discuss it. She was saying to me the other day that A's spots are the classic T zone, forehead, nose and chin. I have read that 80% of adolescents will have spot at sometime, though worse for boys. however I have become a little obsessed at looking at pre teens and young teens and they all seem to have unblemished skin!

Is your daughter worried by spots OP?

Incidentally I think 12 yr old s would be too young for a facial but not sure really.

Hi NanaNina, Since I posted this, we went and bought the Dermalogica for teenagers range - you can get this in a trial pack for £20 from most retailers. I got it from the Westfield shopping centre. My DD started using it straight away and has now used it for a week and the difference is increadible. Most spots have gone or completely dried out. There is a facial scrub which you can use as a mask as well and it did miracles for the blackheads. I would definitely recommend it. We previously trid Liz Earle but the effect was no where near as good so I think we are sticking with Dermalogica for the moment. I have used the Boots products myself but have not found them really good :(. Clearsil is too strong and dries the skin I found and the others do not really work.
My DD is not worried about the spots at all but I find them unpleasant and hate seeing her beautiful skin with them so will make sure she sticks to the cleansing regime.
We have not yet tried any facials, if the products work I will not rush to take her to the beauticians.
Hope this helps. Keep posting.

Oh thanks so much Cartey - When you say you can get this product from most retailers, where did you get it exactly. I live near a Westfield Shopping Centre (Merry Hill) - you don't happen to live near there in the M idlands do you! Is it actually called "Dermological for teenagers"

SO so glad this has had such good effect and A's skin problem upsets me far more than it does her and I'm not really sure what her parents think. Well I think I told you my dil had problems herself so doesn't want to make an issue out of it but she did try clearasil, with no effect as far as I know.

It is obviously expensive if it is £20 for a trial pack b ut i don't care about that. Like you I get so upset at seeing her previously lovely soft skin all spotty........I did ask her if the girls at school said anything (she is at an all girls school) and she just shook her head No.

Thank you so much and will definitely try to find this product and would be really grateful if you could tell me where you got it.

Hi Cartey - I have just ordered the trial pack of dermologica on the internet. Here's hoping................!

cartey · 14/06/2012 05:56

Hi NanaNina,
I am glad you got it. Did you get the Clean Start products for teens? I hope they work for your GD. Let me know how she gets on. All the best!

Oh now I'm not sure if it was called Clean Start but it was the trial pack at £20 and so I assumed it was the products you were talking about. I did put in Dermologica for teenage skin and this came up. Difficulty for me now is whether my dil will actually want to use this, but she did buy clearasil so I will talk to her about it tonight when I see her.

I will certainly keep in touch.

Excellent, sounds like you bought the right thing. Good luck and keep me posted Smile

Well I noticed that A's skin looked very slightly better yesterday when I saw her and mentioned this to my dil (not in A's hearing) and she said she thought A was herself doing the cleansing thing (not sure exactly what). Anyway I told her about this product (told a slight lie and said I had got talking to a woman in the DRs who had told me about it) because she goes on MN and she knows my nickname! She was fine about it and said that it was the same with all skin products, you had to be consistent and use them night and morning and get into a routine of doing it. Anyway the trial pack arrived today so have sent it over with DP who picks up A from school on Friday.

Yes I will definitely keep you posted!

Well done to you, I wish everyone had a grandmother like you! Good luck! I hope it works for your DGD as well as it works for my dd.Smile
