Anyone else got an 11.5yo not going through puberty yet

I'm starting to feel sorry for my DD, she's the only one of her friends not developing, she has gone from being average height to one of the smallest in her year and its starting to effect her.

How do I tell her that it will all happen in time and not to be worried?

Poor DD. It must be hard for her, not least of all because there is nothing anyone can do about it. I was in her shoes, aged nearly 13 before my first period. Obviously she knows, or you will tell her, that it will happen eventually. It will be no comfort, but you can remind her how irritating periods, BO and bras are. She might not know that the later she gets her first period, the lower the risk of various women's cancers. You can also tell her than girls are starting puberty earlier and earlier, and that 20 years ago 11.5 would have been a pretty average age, so she's not really delayed, the others are too early. A reminder that puberty is about getting ready to have babies, which she is too young for anyway. That it can be really hard when your body is ready to have babies but your head is not. That boys can sense that your body is getting ready (because they can see when you start to get breasts etc), and if your head is not ready for all that sort of thing, like boyfriends, the unwanted attention can be very hard to deal with. When did you go through puberty? Was it around the age your DD is now, or later? If so that will be reassuring for her.

If after all that she really wants to keep up with the others, she can still do grown up things like wear deodorant / body spray, have a go at shaving her legs (even if there is nothing there to shave off), and have a look at trainer bras in size 28AAA (they used to be available), or some of those sporty crop tops that are really just short vests.

Yes. My daughter is almost 12. No visible changes yet. She's fine about it.

flapperghasted · 13/01/2012 19:48

My daughter is 11 and desparately doesn't want to go through puberty. She's tall for her age and slender. If she's like me, she'll be 16 before it all kicks off. I'm sure, by then, she'll be desparate to start!!!

So sorry for your dd, but I thought 11 was still early?

BeattieBow · 13/01/2012 19:49

i'm sure it will happen soon. 11 seems quite early to me.

and look on the bright side, my 11 yo dd is an absolute hormonal monster, with spots and a vile mouth on her. plus she wants to wear tight clothes and mini skirts, and has greasy hair. and did I mention she is vile too?

she is from what I can see the most developed in her class, although she doesn't seem to mind.

PizzaSlut · 16/01/2012 22:52

Thanks for the advice. don't get me wrong she is a hormonal monster its just she seems so small and left behind a bit compared to her friends.

I was a late developer. nearly 14 before I had a period and still got no boobs to this day, I was also quite small, not as small as her though (I ended up 5'8), but it just seems they grow up so early these days and my 6yo DD is not that far behind her in height (she's 4'10).

She doesn't fill a training bra but we do make sure she washes and has a spray with her for PE.

My dd is 14 in July...and nada...nothing happening.

Well,she's gone from 30A to 30AA but hat's took 2 years.
She has 3 hairs under her armpit (she's counted!) and says there's more hairs on her top lip than her whole body!

No sigh of periods whatsoever. She is the last one in her group of friends and she hates it. I tell her it will happen and just wait and she says "You have been saying that for 2 years now mum!"

She is very slim and long legged but not really tall compared to some of her mates who really look like fully grown women!

On the plus side...no hormones - no boys! She really isn't into them yet

She is a young 13 though...pic on profile was about 2 years ago and she doesn't look much different.

It doesn't help that she knows I was 10 when my periods started and had mahooosive bazookas Hmm

GraduallyGoingInsane · 17/01/2012 20:41

My DD3 is 11 and nowhere near puberty. She's not got periods, no bust at all (28AA bras hang off). She's about 4 ft 7 and weighs under 5 stone. I doubt puberty will happen any time soon to be honest.

Her older sisters are 13 and 15. Neither have periods yet. DD1 has 30A chest and DD2 is a 28A. I think a lot is genetic - both myself and DH are small, and I was a late developer.

Sadly, that doesn't stop the raging hormones, arguments about everything, urge to wear inappropriate clothes and constant boy drama with DD1.

Confuzzled128 · 23/01/2012 21:30

My sister is 14 and hasn't gone through puberty yet. Is she very light? My sis is about 5-5.5 stone and 4'11". It'll be fine!

cheesesarnie · 23/01/2012 21:33

surely 11 is still bit early?

Popbiscuit · 23/01/2012 21:34

I didn't have much of anything going until I was 14/15. I was very slight and slim though and I think it took putting on a few pounds to get things going. Not to worry Smile

TooMuchInLove · 24/01/2012 14:39

I might have to show dsd this conversation. She is 11.5 only 4 stone and about the size of an 8 year old. she is desperate to start. I'm convinced she won't start doing anything until she is at least 16 but I don't tell her that. She wears crop tops which we call her 'bras' but that's it. she's diddy. (yet still a face full of make up everyday) x

ChickensGoMeh · 24/01/2012 14:42

I was 14 and a half before I had a period. I'd big up the whole 'why would you want to rush in to bloating/spots/PMT?' angle

Asinine · 24/01/2012 14:46

I was 15, I had body hair and a moustache from about 10, and was skinny+++
(couldn't buy trousers to fit for ages). I was paranoid I was turning into a boy Shock...

Then it all happened practically overnight. On the plus side, the later you start, the taller you end up, in general.

My dd started age 11, which did surprise me, as I though that was early.

Fennel · 25/01/2012 14:37

I have a nearly 12 yo who's about 4 stone and the size of a skinny 8yo. She manages to surround herself with similarly petite friends though so she doesn't stick out too much.

I think the only thing that bothers her is that her 10yo "little sister" is bigger and nearer puberty. She doesn't appreciate that. Especially when 10yo calls her "midget" to wind her up. Hmm

Even my 10yo who used to be big for her age is behind most of her class in puberty terms, they are mostly bursting out all over the place. I'm a bit bemused as DP and I are both tall and I was a fairly early developer, but I think my dds are quite happy not to be too close to periods at least. You can emphasise the good points of being small or slow developing for your age.

blameitonthecaffeine · 27/01/2012 21:32

My 11 year old will be 12 in April and so far no sign of puberty either. Very skinny, totally flat chested, no periods.

She's never mentioned being bothered by it though (might have to ask her!) Her friends are a mixed bunch - a couple of very big, well developed girls who look more like 14, a couple of undersized, pre pubescent midgets like her and everything in between.

11 is a funny age, there doesn't seem to be a 'normal' in terms of development.

Eviepoo · 01/02/2012 19:10

Like BeattieBow I have a vile monster too.
A 12yo DD thats 5'6' (2'' taller than me now - which is a nightmare) size 6 to 8, 30C bra.....but still no periods.
I wish I still had my wee girl but also no - she is a gorgeous, stroppy, dirty (takes 54,000 nags to get her to wash) madame who tries to talk to me like I'm sh *t daily and wants to dress in mini skirts and 'designer' (as she says - everyone (read people at school) is wearing Hollister, Jack Wills, Superdry) hoodies.

Tell her that she might want to wait a while for being sweaty, hairy and moody - that the pubety process is not a pretty one oh and periods can hurt!! periods pains are not nice and she'll have enough of periods soon enough.

I'm counting my blessings that mine haven't come back yet! I'm still BF my 5 month DD2 and every month without a period is just great!!
