Are there any books about puberty suitable for an 8yo girl?

DD1 is very mature and starting to ask lots of questions about periods, body changes etc. I'd like a book that we can look at together, but something age-appropriate that doesn't cover sex (yet!), just what she can expect when her body starts to change.

I've done a bit of a search but most books are either too young (Claire Rayner) or include stuff about how to be sexy (Just For Girls, I think?).

Anyone come across anything good?

Sorry it was Girls Only (not Just For Girls) that includes stuff on how to be sexually attractive to boys.

This is a good one. No reproduction. Geared towards the consumers of their dolls (ie: ages 8 +)

not sure about books but I've explored www.lil-lets.co.uk/becomingateen with my 9 year old

she was quite relaxed about it as it is a format she is familiar with

(and then she went and read are you there god, it's me margaret when she was early 10)

Sorry; that sounds a bit odd. I should have clarified that "American Girls" are a very popular brand of doll in North America. Not sure if you have them in the UK?

I have bought the little book of growing up from amazon. Have had a read and nothing

much of concern. Worst bit is when it says you will become a babe when you grow hips Confused
Read the reviews as well on amazon to get a better idea

What's happening to me?

No, that's the title, not a new thread...

It's a lovely book with a lot about body changes and feelings, but less of the mechanics... have a look on amazon Smile

I bought What's happening To Me for DD1 when she was 8. Had a few large drinks then sat down and read it cover to cover with her, then gave it to her to look at whenever she wanted. it's straightforward, a little funny, nonthreatening and not patronising.

I think it's good for them to have a chance to read it before they are misinformed by playground third hand versions of it all....

Thanks all. Yes I strongly agree, OP! I've ordered the book that you recommended, Popbiscuit - will see how we get on. (No we don't have the dolls here AFAIK - hopefully that won't matter!)

American Girl is FAB :)

My dd (now 10) still love the mag, but the books are especially useful. We have eg the anti-bullying one, and one about eating. Very sensible all round.

YY Bleugh. The ones about friendship and getting along with siblings are good too.

The American Girl book is very good, very straightforward, and sticks to basic information, with lots of encouragement for girls to take charge of their own 'care and keeping' too -- eating sensibly, sleeping enough, washing regularly. I like their other books too.

Thanks so much for the American Girl recommendation - it is PERFECT. Exactly what I was looking for, and more. I love their positive, reassuring, empowering approach.

Oh and DD1 thinks it's brilliant - she read it almost in one sitting!
