At what age would you let them listen to this?

DD2 has been into town with her friend (she is almost 12) and bought a CD (am i allowed to type the artist and title?). It's only recently she's been given a bit more rope, but I am already so disappointed. Please tell me your thoughts.

The front of the CD cover says 'PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT CONTENT' (PAEC). It wasn't until she asked to print out the lyrics and I asked to have a look that it all blew up. The tantrum from hell followed, with me the devil etc, spoiling her fun. The lyrics to one particular song had the C word and F word and everything else in abundance - with lines about tying someone up to the bedpost. I was horrified. I have confiscated the CD until I have educated myself on what is appropriate for a (still) 11 year old.

Incidentally, when I Googled it, there is no law in this country that prohibits the sale of PAEC to minors. Disgusting I think.

Anyhow, at what age do you deem it appropriate to let your kids listen to this kind of 'music'? Have I overreacted? She has already learned the words in the playground anyway.

Many thanks in advance

celtic, nice one Smile

I still find it depressing though. Can't face the links, sorry, just wondering where this will ever end. The influence of the www to children is 1st generation, so new. There's going to be huge shifts in perceptions and allsorts I reckon.

Anyway. OldFart-alert...

1970-something I bought Spare Rib, joined a group and marched for abortion rights and 're-claim the night'.
1980-something, my Year 7's were singing 'Like a Virgin' and it was shocking
1990-something, young dd spots a picture of a lady in a sparkly bit of string and fluff on a phonebox we pass every day advertising the local lapdancing club - and she wants to be her, ffs

OP, I do feel by confiscating you're making stuff more appealing though. (Also, your dd may not have even noticed or understood the explicit nature of the lyrics...I remember singing 'Lola' and 'Walk on the Wild Side' innocently, from the age of 10)

All we can do is our utmost to protect them and our absolute best to be open to their questions and concerns.

Thanks for starting this thread [hsmile]

Bloody hell, I was prepared to say that I wouldn't really worry about the lyrics too much and maybe just talk to her about why you don't like them, but having listened to (and read the lyrics of) the first minute and a half - there's no wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy she'd be getting that CD back. I'd take it back for a refund. I wouldn't even want anyone young teens listening to that shit - it's not even music. It's a depressing thunk of anger being spewed out in a scary nasty manner. I would be having quite a lot of chats with her about the music she's listening to and why - it's vile.

I really like Nicki Minaj, but no way would I let a 12 year old listen to her music.

Yellow - really? I don't get what there is to like about it (well not the track linked to above) it's the sort of thing I'd expect girl gangs to listen to - not an 11 year old or your average MNer... Confused It's just so angry and nasty.

Shrug. She has some good lyrics, she's a good rapper, the tunes are good.

Don't see what's particularly angry about it tbh.

Well, I don't want to take up too much space, but this wee bit is charming...

^You don?t like it then peel off, bitch
Every last woman on Earth I?ll kill off, and I still wouldn?t fuck you, slut^

or this bit...

^Make that face, go on, scrunch it up at me
Show me the target so I can lunge and attack it^

and personally I just find the whole sound depressing, angry & horrible. Not at all what I call music.

But her, adults can listen to whatever floats their boat can't they Grin

But 11 year old kids should not be listening to this shit [& I know you said you don't let yours].
