2.9 and writing - is this usual?

My friend has a dd who is 2.9 and she can write her name, legibly, all 9 letters of it, in the right order....

I was saying how unusual I thought this was and she seemed to think it was perfectly normal for her age. What do you think?

I am not sure about 'writing' milestones but I think every child excels in different areas.
Girls are thought to develop verbally first, so maybe that is a factor?

From what you have said, she seems advanced but I don't know any other toddlers of that age to compare it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

i would say that is fairly unusual yes!

MotherJack · 16/06/2010 20:43

It's not perfectly normal, no. It is early to be writing. I could write my name at that age, but it's not usual. Kids are usually mark-making at that age - pre-cursor to writing. She obviously likes writing!

I think that this is fairly unusual. I think that around 3.5 onwards would be more usual for starting to write their name, and IME that wouldnt be especially legible!

onebadbaby · 16/06/2010 20:46

I would say not unheard of, but early compred to most toddlers.

DS could write his name by age 3. DD1 can't remember. DD2 is 2.7 and she can write the first letter (H) and makes some scribbles that look nothing like letters for the rest. From right to left.

Backinthebox · 16/06/2010 22:01

DD came home from pre-school today with the 'star of the day' award. The certificate that she got says she got it for writing her name independently. OH and I were both a bit gobsmacked at this, but as the evidence is sealed in an envelope to be opened on Father's Day, we are not able to even inspect it . DD is 2.9.

EvilTwins · 18/06/2010 22:49

My DTDs could. But I don't think it was really "writing", iyswim - they could "draw" the shapes of the letters in the right order - they could recognise their names and name the letters in them from earlier than that, but they couldn't recognise the same letters in a different context. They are now 3.11, and really CAN write - in that they can do individual letters and write different words using those letters. Before, I think it was just being able to remember a pattern.

Bodenbabe · 21/06/2010 14:37

DS is 2.7 and can write his own name and knows what the letters represent. But he couldn't write any other word, even thoguh he can read simple words.

I'd say it's unusual. As others have said, it's not unheard of ...but it's certainly not the norm and is definitely advanced IMHO
