My DS is getting really interested in numbers.

Any good games you play with your child at home that help them learn through play?

ds2 learnt loads about numbers by playing board games like snakes and ladders. Throwing the dice and getting to recognise numbers, then counting back and forwards. And as far as they know they're just having fun.

Counting anything - stairs, number of soft toys, number of raisins in the bowl (then take one away and see if they know how many left).

Cooking- lots of weighing and measuring

Playing shops - counting things out to "sell" and also dealing with money

different action /noise for each number on a dice. you throw dice and take in turns. We used a giant dice as easier to handle then the smaller dice.

eg throw 1 - jump up and down, 2 - run to touch door and back etc.
you can vary activities and noises to suit location.

Ds used to love this. I used to feel a prat doing this.

used to use giant dice in snakes and ladders, and house that Jack/bob built.

One of my DDs' favourite games for boring bus journeys has been Buzz - you know the one, where person 1 say 1 then person 2 says 2 then person 1 says BUZZ and person 2 says 4, person 1 says 5, person 2 says BUZZ and so on. Obviously make the BUZZ number not easily divisible by the number of people you are playing with (so if 3 people are playing have BUZZ as every 4th or 5th, and so on).

When they get better at it try and do it as quickly as you can. Works well for practicing numbers in foreign languages as well.

Some great ideas already! Here's another two.

Take a sheet of paper and draw a few large circles. Write a number in each, (say 10,11,12,13) then draw a corresponding number of little circles inside each one (i.e 10 little circle in the 10 circle, 11 in the 11 circle etc.) invite your child yo fill the small circles with choc chips or raisins while counting out, and then of course eat them at the end!

For counting to 100, use a 1-100 number chart and encourage your child to teach you the numbers.

Hope these help!

how does a message on a thread about number games get deleted?!

how old is your DS?

this thread may help anyway

mum2JRC · 24/06/2010 09:47

Thanks everyone.
MathsMadMummy not sure how a thread on number games got deleted either!

MY DS is nearly 3 1/2. Getting more consistenet recognising the numbers 0-10. Can do a little adding and subtraction and enjoys these games.

Definitely need to get a dice board game as think he will really enjoy.

Thanks again
