5 day week seems so long...

...my DS has just been allocated a place in local school nursery starting sept - but does he have to go for the full 5 mornings or can we reduce it to two or three? While we really want him to get used to the school he seems too young to have to go every day - he's 3 in June.

I don't know the answer to this but agree that he seems young to be doing 5 days. I'd call the local education authority to see what can be done.

Ours does 5 mornings or 5 afternoons too, no alternatives. We are sending ds to a private nursery that offers funded places instead.

We're in Scotland and ds was allocated 5 pm slots. He only goes Monday and Wed pm though (started in Jan at just turned 3) - I wouldnt have sent him if I had been forced to send him 5 pms. Oh and they keep the other pms open for us if we want to increase and this is a VERY over subscribed nursery so not lots of places going.

Of course you can reduce the days, just take the place up as offered and only go on the days that suit you & him. If they ask why you always aren't there the other days fob them off with "oh, he always seems so tired that day", or shrugging off their question -- and take him when he's ready for the extra mornings.

DD had a 5-days/week afternoon allocated place because that's how it worked -- 5 days or nothing. She usually just went Mondays & Fridays because of my work schedule.

They have the same arrangement at DD's pre-school. They phased the children in over 6 weeks (starting with 2 sessions, then 3, 4 ...). Most parents complained that their children wanted to do more sessions sooner.

Thanks for replies - to be honest i feel really sad putting him into the education system everyday so early, but it feeds into the main school so feel like should do right thing & not turn the place down - think will do as CantSupinate suggests and start with two and work up - just want to keep my baby at home with me!!!

I feel the same lou. It seems far to young for my dd.

So I will take the place but use my judgement on when she should go. I know she wouldn't manage 5 days a week to start with anyway.

I can't wait to send DS in to nursery 5 afternoons a week when he is 3.6yo! I think he needs it, but that's just my own personal view - it depends on your child. DS will really benefit from time at nursery, there's only so much I can do at home with him before he get's really bored. Nursery has all the stimuli he needs.

Seona1973 · 02/04/2010 16:17

I was glad to get ds into his funded place as I use the time he is gone to go to fitness classes/the gym (and sometimes housework if I really have to!!)

lovechoc · 02/04/2010 17:20

seona your mindset must be similar to my own - it's a good opportunity for your child to learn and at the same time it's also a good opportunity for you to get 'me time' whilst they are at nursery. everyone's a winner!

RacingSnake · 02/04/2010 18:53

Of course you don't have to send him for five days! He's your child and you know what is best for him. From the term after his third birthday you can use the funding in any nursery - find one which is a bit more considerate and is thinking of what the children needs, not how to fill their places and make most profit.
