Getting on nursery waiting list before moving to the area?

Does anyone have experience of this? We will have moved from London to the North around six months after DS1 turns three. He will be too late to start nursery down in London, and it doesn't seem worth it for only a few months. But will they accept us on waiting lists for nurseries in the new town up north if we don't live there yet? DH won't even have applied for his job up there until November, so we won't even have the security of saying 'well DH has his new role confirmed' [though we don't anticipate any problems with him getting a job].

Obviously i'll be contacting all the nurseries in the area we're looking at, but i thought i'd ask the good ladies of Mumsnet if they have any knowledge of this kind of situation

Thanks in advance!

We looked into nurseries and schools in August last year as we knew we would move to a new area within 12mnths. School was fab, showed us around and gave us all the paperwork etc. Said no problem re place for DD1 (year 1) and should be ok for nursery place for DD2.

However - we move in 3 weeks time and I dont have a nursery place for DD2 as they are full. The other nursery in the town that isnt attatched to another primary school is also full.

Im now in the situation of putting her in nursery at another primary school - other end of town to the one DD1 will be going to, or hold her off until August when she starts school.

I would call and ask to be honest. Say you would like a place kept available and you will let them know ASAP if it wont be needed.
I wish I had back in August, as I am gutted now that DD2 wont have a nursery to go to.

Thanks DanJARMouse. Sounds like it wouldn't have been a problem at all getting them into the schools, but it's just a case of getting organised in plenty of time... i suppose at least i've started thinking about it quite early. I just hope the nurseries are helpful! Thanks for your reply
