Help - what to dress dd as for world book day?

Dd needs to dress as her favorite character for World Book Day. So far, no problem. But, no fairies or princesses are allowed in the pre-school. So, I asked dd what or who she'd like to go as but she is adamant that she is a princess. Any ideas of characters that I might be able to coax her to agree to?

Little Red riding hood?
Winnie the Witch?

My DD quite likes the novelty of going as a "boy" character - would she go for that?

A big hungry caterpillar?

It's a bit mean to have no fairies or princesses when there's so many books with them in.

An undercover princess? (Pre fairy Cinderella)

gruffalo - brown clothes, purple prickles all over her back etc?

MrsFogi · 16/02/2010 20:27

Thanks for the suggestions so far - to be honest I'll be pleased if she gets out of a princess outfit for a day. Caterpilars and gruffalos would be fun but she'll have to be "pretty" and girly still. I have no idea where my careful avoidance of stereotyping went wrong!

What about a little mermaid? Little red riding hood?

MrsBadger · 16/02/2010 20:32

Alice in Wonderland? Goldilocks? Rapunzel?

Lotkinsgonecurly · 16/02/2010 20:34

I have a dd who is very pink!; How about:

Stephanie from Lazytown
Peppa pig
Dora the Explorer
Alicia diego's sister
Minnie Mouse

OK, they are all tv related and not very imaginative but there are books for all of them and she may agree to be one of them. I did ask dd what she wanted to be and Dora won.

What about the butterfly from the Very Hungry Caterpillar? That way she gets to be really pretty and girly but not a princess or fairy.

Funny to have come as your favourite as long as it's not something specified!

My DD did a very good Angelina, she wore white tights and top, ballet tutu skirt thing, a long mousey tail and ears on a head band, I did a little face painting and hooray!!

Now.. recommend me something for DS age 10 in year 6 for sodding book day!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/02/2010 15:54

Thank you - DS is going as James from the Cherub books by Robert Muchamore which is dead easy - black Cherub t shirt ( tick ) and sort of combat trousers ( tick )

I do think that in Year 6 they are past any pleasure in this - certainly the boys we know.
