3.5 yr old DD - can't write her own name. Normal?

My DD is seems to be the only one in her (small) preschool class that can't write her own name. When I help her trace over it, she's okay but sometimes, gets so frustrated and gets upset. Also, her drawings are all scribbles, not faces or particular shapes. I'm not overly worried but just wondered what the "norm" (if such a thing exists) is. Her teachers have never spoken to me about it and don't want to come across as pushy mum by bringing it up to them.

She will be starting school in Sept aged just 4 yrs 1 month. She's a really bright, outgoing, happy girl.

I think that all children are soooooo different.... some enjoy usin pencils / crayons etc etc .... others are not too interested in them... vise versa... each to their on....
My DS is 3.10 months and is brilliant in areas and in others just plain "lazy" well not lazy.... just not interested!!! Anythin involving making / drawing/ creating / crafts etc etc ..... well lets just say five mins in and youd sear i was sending him to hell and back.... oh!! yes!!! he'll yan!! SO OVER THE TOP TOO MAY I ADD! I mean even don to twiddlin his fingers! AND THIS WAS WHEN E WHERE MAKING OR SUPPOSED TO BE!!! makin PAPER MACHE solar systems!!! I KNOW!!! HOW MUCH FUN HA HA!! I TRY TO TEACH HIM TO WRITE HIS ON NAME often..... instead hell draw a crazy circle and et up to play somethin "FUN"!!!! AHHHHHH! The most annoyin thin is that i know for sure if he just tried once he'd crack it!!! he's one of those who do / see / hear somethin once and never EVER foret about it!!! BUT I KNOW HE IS ABLE.... u see he enjoys things / ames hich make him have to think!!! PROBLEM SOLVIN ETC!!! AND HE'LL HAPPILY PICK UP A PENCIL IF I IVE HIM A "MAZE" PUZZLE TO DO!!! HE LIKES TO DISCUSS THINGS (i men all thins and i mean in depth!!!) but ive always ansered every single question because i know he's not bein annoyin he's actually interested! and hen i tell him he makes a point of tellin it back to me so as to ensure he has ot it right..... By 19 months (i swear) he was singing the alphabet right through ..... even now about 3-4 times a eek i'll sitch the laptop on for just him.... i'll open up cbeebies website, fireman sams and disney cars too..... as he is now very familiar to each site.. once i have opened the sites i can literally go and hoover up as he has mastered the mouse, minimisin paes, enlarin, selectin a game and hitting enter to start!!! and he only remembers all of these thins because he adores the computer... put it this way when the time comes to show him the layout of the letters on a keyboard! he will happily TYPE his name!!! just as he happily colours pictures on the comp rather than on paper!! so basically just remember theyre all different.... try different tactics not just pen and paper... see if he understands the concept of letters etc by havin a chat ith him about it..... oood luck .. not that u need it .... u just need to think of another way to make the name in letters!

Made me think of my own DDs; DD2 now 6 not in the slightest bit interested in picking up a pencil and one of the last in pre-school to write her name ( surrounded by other mums cooing "ooh othermumsdc what a super picture and youve written your name SO neatly"); I went to see her pre-school teacher and she said dont worry, they're not concerned, all get there etc etc. Now DD is in yr1 and at the risk of bleating on is in top sets, is a fab speller and is never without either a book or pencil in her hand. Total transformation.

absolutely normal. overseas in loads of countries they don't start to learn this rubbish until they are 6 or 7.....no impact on long term achievement (infact evidence seems to be its better to delay learning to read and write)....chill.....it'll come.

ggs is 3.5 and can write first letter of his name always,2nd sometimes[its an i!]and 3rd and fourth with lots of help but not unaided.
He can 'read' it and about 6 other words. He knows only some letters and 6 shapes. He can draw a recognisable tractor and a 'bear' with someone saying,'a nice round head, now 2 eyes......'I think as long as they can read and write a little by end of reception its fine.

oh no, something else it hadn't occured to me to worry about! my dd is 3 1/2 and can draw a person but i hadn't even thought she should be able to write!

notnowbernard · 26/02/2010 21:12

3.6 dd2 has only just started taking an interest in 'writing'

She is NOWHERE NEAR writing her name though... can sort of copy letters if I write them down, but they do not take the form of a word, they are scribbled randomly on a page

She can recognise some letters by looking at them

notnowbernard · 26/02/2010 21:13

I am not worried at all, btw... I don't know many 3yr olds who can write tbh

My DS cannot hold a pencil or crayon properly . He knows all his phonic sounds but cannot write his name properly. I encourgae him by getting him to write letters with his fingers in paints and make his name out of cut out letters or fridge magnets. There is so much time to learn this stuff and they will all get there . Wouldn't think you have anything to worry about.

iwasyoungonce · 26/02/2010 21:19

Totally normal. Had dinner last night with my antenatal group, our kids have all just turned 4. We were discussing this at one point, and only 2 of them (out of 6) can write their names on their own (i.e. not tracing/ copying).

P.S. My DD is one of the 4 who can't do it yet!

BlueberryPancake · 26/02/2010 22:32

Yes a mum at preschool said my girl can write her name, which is Eve. Not exactly complicated. DS' name is Matthew. He can do the M and the W but the bits in the middle are just squibbles.

What we do at home is we have a laminated paper with his name in large letters, and he 'does his homework' (it's all fun role play) by 'practicing' his name. He loves it as we do this with an erasable market pen, and he loves erasing the marks. All good fun.

dc5( just 4) can't write, do I care No? Am I interested on teaching her? No Chill out!

kittywise · 26/02/2010 22:56

Also dc1 (now 11) got to the end of his reception year at school only just realising that his name started with a s.
This week he produced the most amazing, considered essay for his history class on why William the Conquerer had beaten his main rivals.
Honestly , chill out!
