is nursery attendance monitored the same way

Is nursery attendance monitored the same way as children attending school? I have just started home edding my older child, and i have just realised that that means i can maybe (if i can save up long enough[hmm} afford a holiday as we wont be tied to school hols.

But, my youngest has just started school nursery (she has just turned 3) and i am not sure whether she has to meet the 85% attendance like older children.

I will check at her nursery tomorrow, but thought i would ask for the wisdom of mumsnet too

no - she doesn't have to be at school so it doesn't matter if she is there or not.

oooh, thanks chou - cheapie hols here i come!!

Seriously though, we have family down in London, and i would love take my home edded daughter to the musuems (they live not far from the musuem of childhood so not just looking for a leisure break!

Just wish i had saved the sun tokens now

no, but

  1. the nursery might get irritated if you are erratic attenders as they might conclude another child wnated/needed the place more
  2. too much non-attendance might affect their receipt of grant
but if you are just talking about a 2 week hol in term time it is unlikely to be a problem

thanks mazzy - no, it wouldnt be too erratic as DD1 needs the house very quiet to study - which only happens the three hours DD2 is at nursery

Newsletter for our school attached nursery suggested that they do. I have been granted leave to take ds out for a week but I had to apply for it on the same form as the Infant School and it did say 85 percent attendance required. I'm not entirely sure how they can enforce it when not of mandatory school age though.

sarahken · 27/01/2010 20:41

My sons nursery school (attached to an infant school) stated that attendence is not compulsory and holidays can be taken etc but we still have to complete a holiday form but that's more for courtsey so they know not to expect the child. Same if they are sick they prefer you to ring them and let them know. Although saying that we went to centreparcs a couple of weeks ago and gave in a holiday form to the office and they rang us midweek to see where he was- but I think this was just due to lack of communication on their part

thanks for that, i will check with them. It is certainly not going to be a regular thing or anything, but nice to know i have the option

Children do not have to attend full time education until they turn 5. So enjoy the cheap holidays while you can.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/01/2010 21:07

No, but I give alot of notice if I am going to take them out.

When my DS1 was at nursery (he is now home edded) we would take the occasional day off (he was only going 2.5 hours anyway) if it was a lovely day. They got VERY arsey about it and we had letters home about it.

feedthegoat · 27/01/2010 21:15

Our school newsletter did specifically say that Holidays in term time would only be authorised for exceptional circumstances (and not just cost) and that this applied to the children in Nursery aswell. I did panic when I read that as they had previously told me it wasn't a problem when he started and I knew we wouldn't get a week away otherwise. Luckily we have got their permission now and I don't have to find out for sure if they can or would do anything!

Plonker · 27/01/2010 23:35

I don't know from a school point of view, but from a funding point of view, erratic attendance can certainly lead to the LA pulling funding.

A week or two here and there is highly unlikely to be a problem though - enjoy

We received a letter about dd's attendance she is 3 and got 80% as has problems with infections and the last 2 times shes had complications resulting in breathing difficulties and a croup like cough meaning no sleep at all for a week and eating virtual nothing and drinking very little as well. I sent a very long letter back to the head telling him what I thought about his letter. We havent even finished the academic year yet and im sure it will improve by the spring time. Furious was not really the word!
