terrified of tv at nursery

i picked my ds (3.4) up from nursery yesterday and he was crying. when I asked why he said that he was scared of the 'ghost pirates in scooby-do'. now, a few times when i have picked him up, the kids have been watching tv - i feel like i can keep him at home to do that but i guess thats a seperate issue! apparently they have been watching 101 dalmations and scooby do and nanny mcphee - i dont think these films are appropriate for the younger ones as they do have some quite scary moments. this is a mixed class of 3 and 4 year olds. do you think i ought to complain as he becomes very scared of any 'dark' scenes in programmes/films iyswim and if we watch tv at home (half hour to one hour max some days)it is usually cbeebies.

ds has been having nightmares about 'scary monsters and dragons' but these have been going on a while. i've got a feeling they will say that they dont have enough staff to just take ds out of room and supervise him somewhere else. what do you all think?

Why on earth are they watching tv at nursery at all?

npg1 · 31/03/2009 15:26

can I also ask why they are watching TV at nursery?

oneofakind · 31/03/2009 16:31

I dont honestly know! I only became aware of the tv when ds asked me about scooby do about three weeks ago. Then on three other occasions since when I have picked him up he has said he watched a dvd (?) for a short while. this is an ofsted rated outstanding sure start nursery but I am beginning to notice other things that i am unhappy about. we are giving notice soon anyway as he is starting at another nursery attached to a school in sept. i spoke to another mum today who said that her ds was also a little frightened when scooby do was put on. I am not against children watching a little tv per se, but think it should be age appropriate and maybe just for 15-20 mins - for eg they were doing a 'project' on dinosaurs and the kids watched a kind of educational dvd as part of it. but scooby do etc ....
how do you think i should go about broaching this with them without sounding too pfb ish. some of the other kids in the class are into power rangers etc so assume they have already been exposed to this level of tv (maybe older siblings) and it is not frightening to them.

I would be interested to know how this would fit in with EYFS......it certainly wouldn't happen here

georgiemum · 31/03/2009 16:38

Scooby Doo is quite scary for little ones. They should know that. Our lot only get 'film time' at holiday clubs once a week.

TV in nursery

You know I am really wondering why we (parents bother sometimes. You try and limit TV intake at home they watch it in nursery. If it was something educative I might understand but ScoobyDoo & Power Rangers?

Your Ds is 3 it is NOT being PFBish to ask that he does watch appropriate things for his age in nursery if they really insist he should watch TV at all!

oneofakind · 31/03/2009 16:58

thanks for the replies - i dont have any other nursery experiences to compare this to but from your replies it seems as if this is definitely not on. i will be speaking to the class teacher tomorrow. Gorionine, thanks for the reply but it is some of the other kids who are into power rangers (which i assume they have seen at home)- they are not showing that on the tv at nursery. as far as i know so far he has seen scooby doo, some of nanny mcphee (does she eat a baby? that is how ds has intepreted it) and some of 101 dalmations. feeling terribly guilty at the mo. about leaving him at nursery due to him not settling in this class and this tv issue is sooo not helping.

One of our local playgroups used to have a TV. They had a lot of complaints and ditched it. So you are certainly not alone in thinking it inappropriate.

And Scooby Doo is clearly not age appropriate - I know a lot of firstborns who would find it terrifying. Younger siblings do get used to these things - but whether that's a good thing is debatable IMO.

FannyJoBanana · 31/03/2009 18:40

It is affecting YOUR child so you SHOULD complain. Poor thing!
A little bit of tv doesn't do any harm, but sitting 3 and 4 year olds for the hour + to watch these films is a bit much at nursery. If it's to give them some quiet time when others might be napping what's wrong with books or jigsaws? Or even a 20 min/30 min CBeebies programme?

acebaby · 11/04/2009 19:20

my DS (3.8) would be terrified of scooby doo. You should complain. I bet your DS isn't the only one scared.

HortonHatchesTheChocolateEgg · 11/04/2009 19:43

I think Scooby Doo is completely inappropriate for that age. Blimey, my daughter's terrified of Numberjacks because of all the baddies. Teletubbies, maybe, or Peppa Pig or Night Garden, which are all gentle and not at all frightening. But really, I absolutely don't see why they are watching TV at nursery at all.

thisisyesterday · 11/04/2009 19:47

my son#s nursery sometimes has a dvd on at the end of the day. some of the children watch it some don't.
if they have a film on they watch half one day and half the next.
it's just to calm them all down during the handover before parents come to collect the ones who go home after lunch.

i don't have a prob with it myself. but I would complain if ds was coming home upset by inappropriate viewing

willowthewispa · 11/04/2009 19:54

Tbh, almost every nursery I've worked in uses TV sometimes - normally around lunchtime while staff are on breaks, some children sleep, paperwork needs filling out etc, and at the end of the day so staff can clean up. We need that time basically.

But, it shouldn't be more than 30 minutes and it should be suitable. It sounds like the issue is the nursery showing unsuitable things.

Numberfour · 14/04/2009 22:15

i disagree 100% with tv at nursery (though i do use it in my childminding setting - i work alone!)

and as for scooby doo and nanny macphee - absolutely not!

say something about it.
i would.

choccynutter · 14/04/2009 22:32

tv in nursery is a big why and no i work in a nursery and we don't even have one in the building . this is very wrong schools only have tellys for educational films or treats for the coming breaks nurserys if they have them should use them for this pupose only

cookielove · 27/04/2009 21:13

my nursery use to have telly, we only use for special treats about once or twice a year, like at the christmas party for the older children, as a wind down when parents come to pick them up, we did sometimes use it as a treat throughout the year but hardly ever, i have to say i don't think its needed and i question the choice of films your children our watching are children watched educational programs as well, you should speak to your manager if ur childs not happy if your not happy speak out, reading back on some of the comments about using it at the end of the day seems silly, our children spend the end of the day usually outside even when it was dark the children loved running around in the garden, although we clearly had lights on
