I am currently chair of our local church based preschool.
I took over in Sept, so am still pretty green when it comes to each stage of the year.

Time of year has arrived for reviewing the staff paye, and planning any increases.

Is there anywhere I can find standard pay scales, for the different grades, as then we can begin to sort this out.

Unfortunately, I do not have very comprehensive paperwork as the job was done pretty halfheartedly for the last year or so

TIA

can you afford to pay them more?

if your preschool doens't have the funds then national / standard rates aren't really that important.....

I've posted before (think it was on a different forum though) and the rates we pay are quite a long way above average. Staff are on £6.35ph unqualified or £7.35 qualified.

Minimum wage is currently £5.73 for those aged over 22.

While you're looking at payroll, did you know statutory holiday entitlement increases from April?

I agree with bumpybecky, our qualified staff who have been with us a long time get more than £7.35 per hour which is above what other pre-schools in the are pay, and a manager should obviously get more. It really does depend on whether you have the funds, where you live etc. We live in a very expensive part of the country.

I didn't realise about the holiday entitlement, so thanks for that.
We can afford to pay them more although already seem to be at a similar level to your staff.
I just still don't think its enough for what they do IYSWIM

Hi

We pay unqualified staff about £5.90, NVQ 2 £6, NVQ 3 £6.20, deputy £7.90, super £9 and as a rough guide supervisors at level 4/5's round us get £10-12 and a level 6 £14.
Hope it's of use.

If you are a member of the Preschool Learning Alliance, the local branch may be able to provide you with a table showing the hourly rates of staff in other playgroups in your area. The information is anonymous - preschools aren't named. It simply lists hourly rates according to qualifications/grade.

E.g:
Preschool 1:
----
Supervisor - £8
Deputy - £7.60
NVQIII - £7.40
NVQII - £6.75
NVQI - £6.50
Unqualified - £5.90

I obtained this information for my area and it helped us (I'm committee chair) to appreciate whether our staff are currently paid above or below average for their skills and experience in this area.
