Should I email the headteacher?

Okay so today my son came home with his lunch untouched.
He has very limited vocabulary and is autistic. He's 5. (Important)
He said he had 'hot lunch'
He was not signed up for hot lunch.
Rang the school and they said he must of got into the line behind his friends and got given a lunch.
Thankfully he doesn't have any allergies that we know of but its made me question how the hell he was able to even get hot lunch without being signed up. What if one of the other non verbal children had an allergy and ended up with something they couldn't eat.
Should I email the headteacher just to make them aware that this could be a problem..
I'm only asking as I feel im too close to the situation and at the moment a little annoyed with the school regarding this so wanted some advice.

I agree that an email wouldn't go amiss but my kid's in KS1 and we haven't had to sign up for hot dinners at all. They are given one automatically unless they come in with a lunchbox so it varies school to school

Well I’ve learned something today. I’m surprised, seems like a potential waste of a fair amount of food.

No. I wouldn't. It's a non issue.

Why are the lunches not free for reception and ks1 at his school?

This.

Are you in England OP? If so and it’s a mainstream school then yes it’s free.

My nephew has a rubber bracelet that he wears in school saying what his allergies are. He often forgets to take it off and comes home with it, otherwise we wouldn’t know they had this system in place.

i think it’s fair to ask why he was able to get a school dinner rather than eat his usual packed lunch.

Who provides the catering at the school? If the kitchen staff really didn’t verify/know who he was before serving him, then this could be a breach of their procedures by the kitchen staff. It depends on what the kitchen staff actually did when they served him, they should be aware of all children with dietary needs and have access to that info in some way. It may be a case where kitchen staff are very familiar with the children at the school and are well versed in which children have dietary needs and which ones don’t, even newer children now it’s a few weeks into the new term. Some kitchen staff put a great deal of effort into getting to know the children and their different needs.

You are right in that although your dc doesn’t have dietary needs, another child might and this seems like it could be a risk factor that needs to be addressed.

If the provider uses an epos system, the child’s name should be selected and their dietary info should come up (provided parents have given the info to the school/catering provider, you’d be surprised at how many parents don’t do this or give confusing/wrong information). If they are using a paper based system they should still be checking some sort of list to verify any dietary requirements.

I would say it’s worth mentioning to the school, failing that reach out to the provider. Your child was fine on this occasion, another child might not be if it happens again. Kitchens have to follow HACCP procedures to control and eliminate risk factors. In my view unless they were confident they knew your dc’s name, they haven’t done all they can to control/eliminate the risk here.

Also just curious, why wouldn’t your son get a free school meal when he falls within the age range for universal infant free school meals?

Nothing happened OP. He has no allergies and lined up with the other kids and had a hot lunch. You’ve already spoken to the school. This is a non event, as they have explained to you. No need to start emailing the head teacher about lunch.

THIS......

More often than not there’s a pre-order system in most schools nowadays, either parents order at home in advance or children put their orders in at registration if they’re having one, keeps food waste to a minimum.

My DC is vegetarian. They no longer have school lunch, but in the 2 years they did, they were given meat meals 3 times. The school denied it, but I don't believe them. DC wasn't bothered. Just told me what was served matter of factly.

HewasH2O · 07/10/2026 22:06

You've informed the school though that he was given a school dinner incorrectly. It sounds as though you are making the assumption that the person you spoke to won't escalate it. I would trust them to do their job, as you've reported it already.
