My DS turned 2yrs in March and im a little unsure of how to approch or get things started with him starting nursery/pre school.

It is now time to start researching my local schools etc and put his name on the lists?

Advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Depends on whether or not you want him to go to school nursery. DD's school takes them from 3 until they go to reception. I didn't put her name down anywhere because before she started at the school, she came to day nursery with me when I was working. We got a place for her because the nursery wasn't full. We visited on the Monday and she started the Wednesday of the same week.

I don't think it hurts to have a look around and see what's about. I think some schools require you to put their names down on a list prior to them being offered a place, but my experience is limited so I'm not much help I'm afraid. Maybe try ringing the schools you would be interested in and asking them what their policy is?

Hello. As far as I know you are entitled to free (from the government!) sessions the term after your child is three. You get 5 x 3 hour sessions which is either a morning or an afternoon session in a school nursery or a session in a 'private' nursery, playgroup or preschool. In order to be able to offer these free places they have to be OFSTEDed. Not that that's a word but you know what I mean! If you want him to go to a school nursery he might not get a place until he is 4 or coming up to 4. Preschools and playgroups tend to take them when they are 2.5 and you pay for the session until you get your funding. I think you can get a list from the children's information service in your area of what there is. And then go and see them. Some are shite! Where I live the nurseries that are attatched to schools take children in age order, not distance or how soon you put them on the list but I don't know if that's the same everywhere. I would ask around and see if you can get any gossip on them.
