Transferring the 30 hours funding

Hi everyone! I'm in a bit of a dilemma and wondering if there's any parents here who can inform me.

So my DS has started his nursery 2 days ago. He is entitled to 30 hours. However, due to the interests of my child, I want to place him back into his former nursery who are happy to accept him.

I have let the new nursery know that I would like to withdraw him. They have said that 4 weeks notice is needed.

Now my question is, does he have to attend those 4 weeks?
I understand that it takes time to withdraw but how long until I can use my 30 hours again for the former nursery? Would it be after the 4 weeks or can it be beforehand?

I was thinking that if I cant transfer my 30 hours within those 4 weeks then can I pay for those 4 weeks until I can use the code again?

I just don't want to leave him in for 4 weeks as he will settle and it's not very nice to move him at that time.

Please advise!!!

I think its per term as in 3 terms a year. You can split hrs per week between provider but because you sign the forms in advance not sure if you can change mid term.

Yes, I think this is the case. We had exactly the same situation unfortunately and missed the funding for the rest of that term until we got the new code. This was about 2 years ago. The old nursery our son went to even phoned (childcare choices?) on our behalf to see if there was any way around it, but there wasn't.

Even though they've said 4 weeks notice is needed? What is the purpose of that then if I can't place them in nursery for a whole term?

In answer to you questions, no you don’t have to attend for the 4 weeks notice but your funding at the new provider will not start until the 4 week notice period has ended. You can of course pay for those first 4 weeks yourself. I would speak to your local authority for guidance.

It's 4 weeks notice to leave their setting (a bit like handing in your notice at work) and he doesn't need to attend during that time if you don't want him too but transferring the funding is separate to their notice period.

So my reconfirmation falls in October. Is that the same as getting a new code?

You won't need to pay the nursery you're leaving after the 4 weeks. So you'd pay 2 nurseries potentially for 4 weeks (and don't send child to the newer one, or send you child for the remaining 4 weeks and switch). Most people don't send for 30 hours only as its stretched or they have top up fees, so you wouldn't have to pay this. You might be able to see if you can do a deal with the old nursery to reduce your notice as I wonder if they'll get the funding anyway? My son only attended for 4 days and as a "gesture of kindness" they reduced the notice period from 3 months to 1 month. Ugh.

That's when you reapply and get the new code for January.

Dandelion7 · 30/08/2023 21:40

So potentially you won't get 30 hours funding for october/november/ December at your nursery and you'll have to pay the hours instead. This was what happened to us. Bit of a nightmare to be honest. Maybe there is a way round, but we didn't find it 2 years ago.

hahavzv · 30/08/2023 21:42

Is there no such thing as transferring the codes?

We jumped in a bit quick switching back nurseries to be honest. I didn't realise how bad the financial impact would be. But like I say, this was a while back. We're high earners and so it didn't cause hardship- just more a slightly galljng decision. If it did, I'd have contested more and involved mp etc. I suspect there's a loophole somewhere if you absolutely needed it.

At that time the nursery and us looked into it and couldn't find a way. The nursery manager of the nursery we went back to said she spent 2 hours on the phone trying different ways. She was shocked. We were in a situation where the new term hadn't started yet, but the voucher code had been applied.

You need to speak to your LocalAuthority rather than the nurseries about your eligibility. They will be able to see that you have an eligible code and ensure the funding is split between the old nursery and new nursery.

Dandelion7 · 30/08/2023 21:48

This really was a while back and it might depend on your local authority. Hopefully someone else will respond on this with a success story. I didn't fight all that hard.

hahavzv · 30/08/2023 22:00

This is giving me anxiety!!! I really don't want to be stuck. I want my child to be happy.

Speak to the local authority. Its annoyingly confusing!

hahavzv · 30/08/2023 22:09

I've just read that finding doesn't start until the 1st September so technically, I should be alright... I think! Will defo speak to them tomorrow

Good news!

They said the deadline to submit all the codes would have been today so my code wasn't used yet. They were happy to let me use it for the other nursery.

They also waived the 4 week notice!

Grateful is an understatement 🙏🏼

You are so lucky! Ours was submitted before the deadline! So pleased it worked out for you.
