7+ preparation in reception

Hi,

My DD is currently 4 years old and will be starting reception in September. I would like some tips/Advice on how can start preparing her for the 7+ exams which is 2 and a half years away. I understand that for some it might seem too extreme but she is below Average. I have recently started doing phase 1 phonics and basic number/Math.
Am I being too hopeful?
She does enjoy learning, but I didn't start sooner due to my personal health.
I understand children her age are way advanced!
Do you think I have enough time to work with her to get her to that level?

Would appreciate advice from parents who have been in a similar situation.

Thank you

I think you have enough time.
My son is 4 (April 2023) and we do some basics on understanding the alphabet, basic maths (adding and subtracting), days of the week, shapes, writing (pen control) and phonics.
He also has a session with a tutor once a week for 30 mins.

We have the advantage of having the learning material from my elder son's (independent school) Year 1 & 2 so will progress to those in due course.

I wouldn't assume all children her age are super advanced as they all learn at different paces. I've only just begun in ernest with my son and he's picking things up quickly.

You have probably looked at the 7+ exams already so you have an idea of what you'll need to work to.
I wouldn't try and overload her at this age. Just keep making it fun and engaging.

Hi @Allbutone it might beneficial to employ a tutor who can not only guide your DD but also give advice on how you can support her. I have a teacher friend who has tutored 7+ for many years and also works in Early Years she might be able to give you some advice on next steps if you would like? Do DM me if that would be helpful.

Don’t push her let her go. At her own pace

You’re paying the school so they will sort out the academics. You should focus on the softer skills: concentration, hand strength, stamina, asking questions. Read to her, play lots of montessori style games (using screwdriver is, in my experience, one of the best ways to build hand strength quickly for writing) play some ‘fun’ games like mazes, logic puzzles etc.

She’s not even started school?! Yet you feel she’s below average?! It’s far too early to be starting anything. Give her at least a year before you get an idea where she is and even then go slow!
