How to learn to write their own name?

Ds is in nursery and is 4 in January. He can do the first letter of his name and have a bash at the second but I don't really know how to encourage him to do anymore than this. Others in his class can do their whole name and his teacher said it's something we should work on next, just wondering what you guys think?

Don't agree that it doesn't matter how they form letters. It's devilishly difficult to get young ones out of the habit of forming letters incorrectly.

Another idea is to let them draw letters in sand with their fingers or (really strange but feels lovely) cornflour/ custard powder mixed with some water on a tray.

I really wouldn't worry if he's not interested at the mo. Pushing him if he finds it difficult will only put him off. He is still young.
