Thinking about doing this for next year. Did you defer to start in year 1? Or in reception following term or just start later in year?

We have deferred ds this year after lots of consideration and advice from professionals working with ds.
Ds will start reception class in September 2022.
He will be going to the school's nursery this year.

It is a difficult decision to be honest. I was all set to defer the year and look into home education (which is still an option maybe) but my DD actually started saying I want to go to school. After months of not wanting to go to nursery. So I decided I would go with it. I spoke with school admissions and the school about half days only for a term or her starting in January but you was told this was not an option. And that it was best to start the full programme, which I wasn’t too happy about. Anyway my daughter did the settling in week which was half days and has now been full days for two weeks. She is very tired all the time and very upset going to school but I’m told she settles very quickly. There’s been days she tells me she’s bored then there’s days she says she’s had fun. Each day at pick up she is smiling (could be that it’s home time 😀) and can’t wait to tell me about the day. They were five homework on the first week (settling in week) and get homework each week. This I don’t agree with, they are 4. It’s not one task but 3-4 rack week. Other local schools do not have homework in Reception. The first week my daughter got a bit anxious with it, so now we do what we can manage.

It’s only been 3 weeks I still feel half day options or delayed start in the year would have been helpful.
I’m going to see how this term goes. I have been looking into Home Education and what’s local to me.

But I am extremely disappointed in the schools responses each time, there seems to be no negotiation.
Also I know we are living in Covid times but it would help children settle if parents could take them into class and stay a bit.

It’s not very common
I’ve worked in nurseries for 20 years and have never had a child defer yet

Really? There are 2 children (June and August birthdays) in my son's class who were deferred by a year. Unsure how many others throughout the school but I doubt it's that uncommon.

Yes, it’s true
I’ve never known a child to defer in all the years I’ve worked in nurseries
I’m sure there are children in the local schools who defer but they have never been in any of my preschool classes

I deferred my Summer born child a few years ago and it was definitely the right decision looking back. The nursery was excellent though so they were learning through play for an extra year with loads of outdoor time.

School and nursery were all very surprised and seemed to quietly think I was a bit bonkers. That didn’t bother me in the least though. I felt it was the right decision for my DC and looking back I am even more certain it was now.
