Under-seven 'too young' to read?

According to world learning expert Lilian Katz, if children are pushed into reading too early, form an impression of themselves as inept. Boys particularly!

I disagree with that.

I think it depends on the method you choose, for instance Glen Doman method is perfect for young children.

According to this method you should introduce reading as a game. Children have fun, they are not tested or forced to read when they do not wish to.

I know I'm coming in late here- sorry- . My youngest left Steiner school aged 7 in May unable to read or write little more than her name and a few words- tho' she was gagging to read/write. Now at primary- she learnt to read in two weeks- now on chapter books and writing sheets of joined up writing. She reads and reads- I have to bribe her to turn out the light. Her teacher last weeek said she's at the same level as the other 8 year olds in the class.
I really think children vary so hugely there's no blanket solution to accommodate each one, which unfortunately schools have to do. I have friends who grew up in small African villages with no education to speak of who now have degrees and mega careers.
We get worked up about doing the right thing and competing- starting with the reading trees and sats when they are barely out of nappies. There's time enough for them- they need to be kids too.
