Reception child not reading long words

Hi!

I have had this issue looming over me for a couple of months and I don't know how to deal with it. Thank you for your input.

My eldest is in Reception and struggling to read. She reads short words very well and is getting quite confident, even with most tricky words. However long words just baffle her. She forgets the first part of the word, mixes the letters, .........

I have mentioned it the teacher but the teacher doesn't say anything about it at all. Not even to help me help my child or to reassure me.

About me: English is not my first language. In my country we start learning how to read/write slightly later and I, always the good student, was reading /writing in 2/3 months. It's a language with set rules so apparently much easier to learn. (Besides the grammar Confused)

I don't know if this is normal, or whether there might be an issue. Or if there are techniques that I can use to help her. Is she just being distracted? Does she have poor memory for this kind of task? I don't know!!!! Sad Could it be dyslexia? How can I tell? Shall I speak to someone?

If she's in foundation, the fact she can read short words is fab, many kids can't manage that by end of foundation.

Don't rush her, don't force it, let her enjoy learning :)

No one will test for dyslexia until year 3 minimum.

You could make an appointment with the teacher if you're concerned I'm sure.

They try to get them reading far too young here, I think. If they enjoy looking at books that should be enough. You proved the point really, in a sensible country that starts formal learning later.

I agree that they start on writing far too young here. It opens up the possibility of putting them off school and reading for absolutely no good reason at all. It is such nonsense and completely unnecessary.

Praise her for what she CAN do - get excited about the short words she reads and above all else do not put her under pressure.

Just enjoy her! Smile

I think maybe MY biggest struggle is the lack of communication from the teacher. I wish she would just say "that's normal", because I don't know what's normal

I have the same issue with not knowing what's normal. The teacher forgets we don't all know what happens at school. The lack of communication is really challenging for me. It's impossible to speak to them on drop off for more than 1 minute and they rapid fire out the kids on collection, so equally impossible then .
