Preschooler's maths - averagely bright or something more?

DS (4.3, starts school in the autumn) comes out with stuff like "Me plus Grandad = Granny" (ie ages are 4, 69, 73). We hadn't been discussing the respective ages just then.

We know he's switched on, but is that anything exceptional for his age?

No idea but my 5.3 year old could not do that without support. Maybe she’s not that bright? No idea.

Any other examples? If you hadn't been talking about their ages then it's most probably a fluke?

Um, he told me that if you had 100 monkeys jumping on 10 beds, you'd get 10 monkeys on each. I'd just said wow 100 monkeys, that would be a lot of beds.

Did he clarify the granny/grandad example for you? i.e. that he was adding but the ages of each person? If so and it was deliberate then yes, his maths ability is quite advanced for his age.

That said, I'm not sure it means very much in the longer term. By all accounts I was similar at nursery age, would ask my mum to write me pages of sums to do at home because I loved maths so much. By around 7 I was getting frustrated that she couldn't make them advanced enough for me to do. I can promise that I'm no maths genius these days so I guess it all evened out over time? 🤷🏼‍♀️

@rottiemum88 yes he specified that he was adding up the ages
I know what you mean - he is an early reader too, as was I, but there is certainly nothing unusual about my intellect

It's ahead of national average but wouldn't say exceptional or gifted. Most of the kids in our DC's school nursery could count to 100 and do basic addition and subtraction, as well know some times tables by the time they were ready to start reception. Definetly encourage it, especially if there's a keen interest.
