Hi everyone,

I need help....

I love teaching phonics and want to start running intensive phonics sessions for children ages 2.5 to 6. However I'm not sure where I can start. I live ion West London.

Is there anyone here who maybe interested in these sessions for your child???
If so how much are you willing to pay?
What times would you prefer these session to take place?

Thank you for your help....

Are you a teacher?

SolAlii · 19/08/2019 02:39

Hi,

Yes I am.

I have been teaching over 12 years also Montessori trained.

Hi, thanks. I'm not sure if there is much demand for it as phonics is done to death in eyfs as it is and if parents want to do extra they can teach it themselves.

ElizabethMainwaring · 19/08/2019 16:29

Also, I think that phonics is overrated. It's not the only way of learning to read.

MarigoldGlove · 19/08/2019 16:30

How about a class teaching the synthetic sounds to the parents, rather than the children?

PuffHuffle5 · 19/08/2019 16:46

Phonics is done pretty intensely at school already - I know some schools in London already run extra morning sessions for children who struggle, so not sure how great the demand would be tbh. It’s also pretty straight forward for parents to practice with their children at home themselves so unless they have a lot of disposable income I’m not sure anyone would be prepared to pay extra - even then they’ll just get the nanny to do it. Parents are more interested in maths tuition than anything else from what I can tell - it’s harder to teach if you’re not trained to and once kids have fallen behind it’s also tricky for schools to help children catch up and keep them on track.

Fonix is hideously overrated and relentlessly pushed at schools already.

Atlasta · 19/08/2019 16:56

I agree there is already lots of work done on phonics in eyfs.
I don't think many parents would pay for something that will be relatively easy and straightforward for them to help and encourage their DC with throughout everyday interactions.
I personally would be more likely to spend money on tuition as the child got to 6+ and on maths and literacy.

I’m sure there’s a market OP. I know of phonics classes available for preschool aged children in my town.

I’ve just Googled and it’s a franchise: soundsrightphonicsclasses.co.uk/

Might be worth checking if there’s already a franchise in your area.

SoyDora · 19/08/2019 17:02

I’ve got a child who has just finished reception and a child who is starting reception in September. Phonics was taught to them at pre school, at various groups we went to, and then obviously in reception. I don’t think they needed any more phonics to be honest.

Thank you everyone, your messages have been very useful.

I have also been offering private tutoring for over 10 years now. But I just love teaching phonics along with creative writing for ks1 and lower ks2.

I'll search around for franchises in my local area.

Thank you soo much everyone SmileSmileSmile

I may have been interested but my children are too old now.

I’d have wanted to know what scheme you were following. I’d have said yes to Sounds-Write or Phonics International but no to Letters and Sounds.

Camomila · 20/08/2019 21:55

I'd be interested, not all pre-schools do a lot of focus on phonics, especially if they are very child led, and not all parents feel confident with the sounds (especially if English isn't their first language).

That's interesting about maths. I used to be an EYP (now early years teacher) and I don't remember having much specific 'maths' or 'phonics' training, but I always found maths activities easier to plan. They seemed more 'common sense' to me, and easier for parents to help DC with.

grumpypug · 24/08/2019 22:44

The trouble with phonics is everyone assumes letter sounds and blending and segmenting leading onto reading and writing. I am a nursery teacher and will be running phonics sessions for parents each week (to come into school and be alongside their child). It won't be anything to do with letter sounds, instead it will be aspects 1-6 of phase 1. I also love teaching phonics and looking forward to broadening the parents understanding and giving ideas of things to do at home.

Fandabydosey · 16/10/2019 01:05

@SolAlii I think running school readiness sessions for parents and training nursery staff how to make correct sounds is probably a much better solution. The amount of times I hear people adding uh at the end of letters sounds is unbelievable. There really isn't enough training for practitioners to master this let alone teach it to children and teach them wrong.
