Pop see ko - not happy that dd’s school put this on

Have you seen or heard of the pop see ko songs? If not please google and come back to this post. Am I being unreasonable at being annoying that my child’s highly reputable, traditional in teaching school are putting on these kind of videos for the kids to watch? They are 3-4 year olds in the nursery year and only attend for a few hours a day.

I understand the videos are designed to encourage movement amongst children during classroom time but why does it need to be down via a screen? Why can’t they bring in external sports providers. At our previous nursery we had tennis, and other forms of physical activities provided by external sources.

I’m not a “no screen time” mum by any means but I expected better from the school I chose to send my child.

Thoughts?

Is this GoNoodle? It's pretty widely used in schools.
They don't use external providers because of the cost.

breathandrelax · 26/10/2018 20:51

Yes go noodle. I’m realising it’s widely used since doing my research but doesn’t make me feel happy about it. I’m even sure it’s age appropriate.

External providers...

£££££££££££££££££

insancerre · 27/10/2018 06:54

We pay £50 for 30 minutes for external providers
That’s a lot of money over the year

FallenSky · 27/10/2018 06:58

My DD is 5 and loves GoNoodle. Lots of movement, mindfulness and fun. As said already, external providers cost a lot.

OliviaStabler · 27/10/2018 07:02

You think the school should waste lots of money bringing people in to show kids something that's free on YouTube?

melin · 27/10/2018 07:54

The kids live it, it gets them moving, it's free and fun. Outside agencies are expensive and unnecessary. I think you should relax

breathandrelax · 27/10/2018 09:02

Would you expect the same from an independent school who gets tonnes load of money every year?

Independent schools are mostly on a tight budget too. I will google these videos but unless they are dominatrix themed or are teaching the kids to pole dance, I would think it’s probably ok.

As other people said, getting someone in to do this costs so much.

Squishies · 27/10/2018 09:12

I did PE to the radio at infant school. It was a programme called music and movement. This is the modern day equivalent I guess.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 27/10/2018 09:18

Aghhhhhhhh

The “my hands are high my feet are low” is a variation on an American camp song that I used to have to sing ALL DAY and now after a decade or so it is right back in my head. Make it stop!

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 27/10/2018 09:20

I do think that any pre school environment that prides itself on having graduate, highly qualified and experienced staff shouldn’t be using stuff like this on a regular basis. I don’t like those videos and I don’t see what they offer that can’t be achieved without screens and good staff.

Once every now and then would be fine, but as a matter of routine? Lazy, IMO.

OliviaStabler · 27/10/2018 09:52

Yes. Why spend money when you do not need to? I'd worry if they did spend money on stuff like this, would indicate very bad management.

Weezol · 27/10/2018 10:01

Squishies Me too - I can't really see the difference between that and this to be fair.

OP - not only will an external teacher cost, they'll also increase the insurance premimumd and the amount of time dedicated to h&s paperwork. These costs will also need to be passed on to parents.

Are there no options available locally like baby ballet, little kickers football, gymnastics or swimming?

BareBum · 27/10/2018 10:02

The idea that there is endless cash in independent schools is one that my pupils subscribe to; they don’t consider staff salaries (not just teachers but catering, admin, grounds, cleaners, caretakers), building maintenance, utilities, minibus leasing, accounting etc.

Each department has a budget just like in state schools - it may be bigger but it’s not endless.

youarenotkiddingme · 27/10/2018 10:13

I LOVE it!

It's very relevant in the genre of music they use which encourages and motivates the children to join in. Fantastic when we have a generation of non movers and obesity crisis.

I've used it with SEN teens (severe LD) and they've made masses of progress in imitation of movements as it's so engaging for them.

Piglet208 · 27/10/2018 10:29

I had to google. I watched a video which encourages movement, copying, an appreciation of a beat in music, repetition of key phrases and is fun. All of which are appropriate for 3-4 year olds to encourage them in physical development, expressive art and design, literacy and communication and language. Not bad for 3 minutes. Would you be happier if the teacher played classical music and demonstrated her own moves? Seriously, I'm sure the teacher also plans lots of other engaging activities which require more effort and pedagogy. Using this type of video can be a great warm up or stimulus and does not indicate laziness. If you want to pass judgement on teaching then go and study early years education first.

My son's private school uses it in short bursts a few times a day. Gets the kids up and chases the cobwebs away a bit. No issue with it.
