Lunchboxes.... and my dd in reception

Tongiht she told me that everyone in her class has crisps in their lunchbox everyday. I was shocked! she wants crisps but I always give her a healthy-ish lunch. I'm tempted to offer her crisps on a Friday as a compromise as I don't want her to feel 'different' but at the same time.. why do kids have crisps everyday? they are still only 4 at the end of the day...

opinions please, should I give her crisps (once a week). She's only been staying for lunch since easter

Would she be happy having healthy-ish crisps like pom-bears, or rice cakes? Having those once or twice a week won't kill her.

DrNortherner · 11/05/2007 22:23

My ds is in reception and he says similar. I give him hula hoops on a Friday. Others have cakes and biscuits every day too from what I can gather, apart from one boy who has seaweed but noone will sit next to him

ScaryHairy · 11/05/2007 22:24

I bet everyone else doesn't have crisps everyday. That's exactly the sort of thing I used to tell my mother in a desperate bid for an illicit Capri Sun drink in my lunch box...

PeachesMcLean · 11/05/2007 22:25

Once a week is fine. You're right, everyday isn't. But if she's four, don't necessarily believe that ALL children have crisps EVERY day. (as you know) Even at my son's school, which certainly isn't posh, it's unlikely. Some kids yes, but not all.

Radge · 11/05/2007 22:26

Kids always say 'But mum, EVERYONE, has blah blah blah...' when they want something. It's the oldest trick in the book.

Crisps are shite. Stick to your guns.

Sparkler1 · 11/05/2007 22:27

My children have crisps every day. I don't find this a problem. The rest of their lunchbox consists of a sandwich (sometimes brown, sometimes white bread) with fillings of either marmite/cheese spread/cheese/ham. They also have one or two pieces of fresh fruit, a small yoghurt and sometimes a cake bar.
I really don't have a problem with them taking crisps. As long as the rest of their diet is fairly balanced what's the problem? They eat a good breakfast of cereal and a well balanced evening meal.
I really don't know why people panic about food so much.

SlightlyMadScarecrow · 11/05/2007 22:32

My DDs have crisps or Chocolate every day too. That is only part of the lunchbox and as long as it is not accompanied by a pasty and a fruit shoot, and they have a good meal in the evening I personally don't have a problem with them having 1 packet of crisps each day.-

MascaraOHara · 11/05/2007 22:34

I'm not panicing. I was just chatting.

I don't buy crisps at home so it would be a change for me.

I don't beleiev all the children have crsisps everyday but I do think most probably do and it's not that I'm entirely opposed to it but I rememebr always having crisps and choclate in my lunchbox and I do find it hard now (as a grown woman) to go 1 day with either or both.

Mascara - sorry - wasn't pointing at you as an individual. I'm just amazed at all the threads that appear on Mumsnet on how terrible people think giving your child a fruitshoot/cheesestring/sausageroll/packet of crisps etc etc etc is. I really don't find it a problem as long as the rest of their diet is balanced.

portonovo · 12/05/2007 18:25

I wouldn't give children crisps every day simply because they are generally high-ish in salt and have little nutritional value. So just not good for children, especially small children. They are a treat food not a staple.

I think once a week is fine - that's what I do with my 3.

I expect most children really do have crisps every day, most of the 2-4 year-olds at our playgroup do and from what I've seen of packed lunches at school most children do.

handlemecarefully · 12/05/2007 18:27

Are you sure she isn't errrr fibbing? I only ask because my dd (also in Reception) is a pathological liar, especially if she thinks a fib will strengthen her bargaining position

MascaraOHara · 13/05/2007 20:24

Oh I'm sure she is fibbing to some degree, that said, I'm think most probably will have crisps most days. She hasn't mentioned it since but if she does I will probably go for once/twice a week

Dd doesn't have packed lunch as everyone at her school has a school lumnch. However it is rare that I would make a packed lunch without including crisps. Not a whole packet mind, just a handful. I really don;t see the problem and I wouldn't entertain eating a sandwich myself without a packet of crips or a bag of chips to go with it.

suwoo · 13/05/2007 21:13

My DD is in reception and crisps are banned in lunchboxes. The school has some healthy award which is great IMO. My DD snitches to me when her friends have crisps LOL. I think jam sandwiches should be banned too

portonovo · 14/05/2007 13:56

islandofsodor - would you really never eat a sandwich without crisps or chips? I just found a bit odd... sorry!

Like I said before, I really think this is one of those times when children generally aren't exaggerating when they say 'everyone has crisps'. I would say on any given day at school/playgroup, at least 90% of children have crisps. And probably over 75% of those have crisps (a whole bag) every single day. Some have 2 packets. That's a whole lot of salt and no nutritional value.

Since this thread started I have helped out at playgroup over 2 lunchtimes - the first time, out of 16 children, 13 had crisps. The second time 15 out of 18 did. Most children have crisps every time they stay for lunch. And these are children aged 2 1/2 onwards.

foxybrown · 14/05/2007 14:00

Mine get crisps sometimes, but never a full bag. A small handful in one of the compartments of his lunch box. Depends what else is in there and what type of sarnies I've made.

cornsilk · 14/05/2007 14:05

Mine have crisps or chocolate every day. Didn't used to but the other children DID!
I lightened up when ds was accused of pinching another child's crisps. He said he didn't and I don't think he did, but he was under suspicion as the only child in class who didn't already have a pack.

Vinegar · 21/05/2007 18:51

Mine has crisps(no salt ones) most days. Not the whole pack, but I put a handfull in for her to eat with her sandwiches. She also has fruit, so don't think it is such a big deal.

islandofsodor · 21/05/2007 22:33

No, never, not unless there were no potatoes in the house.

Sandwhiches are so boring, but then again I don;t like butter, marg or mayonaise so i have to have something to go with my dry bread and meat.
