Number bonds for pre-schoolers

My DS who is 3 amazed me this weekend by knowing the number bonds to ten. I have played the ping pong game (where I say a number and DC says the relevant number bond to ten) with my older DC so maybe he's picked it up from that but that is a while back.

He seems to love this kind of stuff and I wonder if there are fun activities I can do to expand his knowledge. Not in a hot housing kind of way but he tells me himself that he likes 'work' and 'School games'..

Any good maths resources for Pre-schoolers? Ideally physical rather than apps.

Could you teach him double digits and larger numbers? Walking around talking about house numbers type games.

My preschooler finds them fascinating. (she used to love adding too, but seems to have lost interest in that sadly!)

Thanks. That's a good idea. He loves house numbers, is obsessed with odd and even etc.

I've bought a few Orchard games aimed at counting / numbers but he's a terrible loser so not always a great idea Grin

He likes doing crafts so was thinking of doing things like make ladybirds with different amount of spots although that does seem like a lot of work

haha! I'm sure he'd enjoy it little maths crafts. You could do random sums with them afterwards? Like 5 spots + 3 spots = 8 spot ladybird?

I might pinch that actually!

What about money? Good wander around the shops...

carinwashingmachine · 29/01/2018 22:21

Oh yes, money / coins is a good one!

I'm enjoying having a little mathematician to be honest as I've always loved maths myself..

Older DC learning times tables at the moment so I might see if I can convert a little bit of that learning into 3 year old level.

I'm aware I sound a bit bonkers but he genuinely is interested. Was making sums with his felt/velcro numbers earlier while other DC was watching tv..

I totally agree with grabbing something they're interested in and running with it. Next year he might be into something else and you would have missed the opportunity to show him learning is fun.

HSMMaCM · 30/01/2018 14:58

Sorry ... obviously there will be more opportunities, but grab them while you can.

Would also make sure he understands numbers - as a concept too.

1button +1 button=2 buttons,
1 dog + 2 dogs = 3 dogs...
does not always translate in a child's mind to 1+1=2 or 1+2=3

or if you have 1 button +1 dog... and add 2 dogs... some kids "get it", others need it explaining more.

Thanks both and I totally understand what you mean re grabbing the opportunity.

Also understanding the concepts. My older DC is learning times tables and that's quite a tricky one to visualise/understand properly especially when you get to higher numbers.
