Love my ds's preschool, but......

I find that i am a bit upset at other bits, primarily the Jolly Phonics and learning to read bit

I realise that i may be overreacting (and feel free to tell me if i am , but they will not let him progress without him knowing the actions.

When he started preschool my dh and i started to help him with the sounds (he loves doing letters). He learnt these without the actions and was signed off on the letters at preschool until a couple of weeks ago, when i was told that he should know the actions as well as it was making things difficult for him in circle time.

So, we helped him with the actions - but they will still not progress him. They have started him back at the beginning to now sign off on the actions as well as the sounds ! This unfortunately has caused my ds a few problems as he has now started to pronounciate 'th' as 'v'. I asked him why, and he just gets upset and says that he can't do it - although he could before they started all the pratting around.

Anyway, we have decided to carry on at home and try to ignore what the nursery is doing. He is now starting to read the Dr Seuss books and is loving them

Not quite sure why i posted, but it has helped writing it down. If anyone is still reading, thenks.

It really doesn't matter. They will no doubt start at the beginning again when he goes into reception anyway....

but it sounds stupid...the point of the actions is surely as an aid to the children memorising the letter sounds! If he has got there without the actions then he has learned what he needs to learn; the actions are not an end in themselves and I find it bizarre that this should hold him back!

However so long as it doesn't affect his enjoyment of pre-school.......

yoda i agree with sunny, when he starts reception/p1/whatever your school calls it he will be fine

juuule · 18/04/2007 17:00

Absolutely ridiculous imo. Agree with Sunny. You just do your own thing with him.

Bucketsofdynomite · 21/04/2007 19:26

That is daft, it's not a requirement of pre-school at all. He's obviouosly bright enough to learn the signs too but doesn't see the point, as long as he's contributing something sensible they shouldn't be pressuring him.

God I do hate it when children are penalised for not wanting to fuck about!

Sorry but your post made me laugh
SO he knows his phonics but cant move forward because he doestn know the actions That' madness!

DD knows her phonics now but they havent taught her any actions at her nursery. I am assuming this wont be an issue for her later.....
