Nursery End of Year Report

DS2 will start in reception in September. He has been attending a nursery school that is attached to a primary school. He has received his end of year report.

Alongside written sections about how he has progressed this year, he has been given a number between 1 and 3 next to things like 'speaking', 'reading' and 'numbers'. A 1 is "working towards foundation stage expectations 30-50 months", a 2 is "working at foundation stage expectations 40-60 months" and 3 is "working beyond foundation stage expectations 40-60 months".

My boy is 49 months old, so does this mean that if he has been given a 1 for a section he is just about managing to reach the level expected of a child between 2.6 and 4.2? Does this indicate a problem because a bright 2 and a half year old could do what he is doing? Does this mean that he will probably just about manage mainstream school?

Thank you for reading this slightly complicated post.

It is a very wise age band so I wouldn't worry too much - if I remember my ds's nursery leavers report I recall him being 30-50 months.

What the overall aim is, is that by the end of reception year all children should have completed the 40-60 month targets and the early learning goals.

If your child is 49 months old and fit into the 30-50 month age band you have nothing to worry about. They are working at age expected level.

The 30-50 month bracket is huge in many areas of the development matters document, but also very restricting in others. Do not worry about it.

Average child ends nursery between 30-50 and 40-60 bands. The development matters document is to be used as a best fit approach so try not to get too hung up on it. Sounds like your child is developing at a normal rate. Smile

Although the system of grading them 1, 2 an 3 is terrible! They should have working towards, working at and working beyond for each age band. They've totally cut out working within and working beyond 30-50 which I imagine your child is at

Thank you very much for your replies. I am feeling far less worried now. My older child has SEN so I am unsure what the report for a typically developing child should look like.

DS2 does have lots of 2s as well, and he is happy at nursery. I think I just need to stop panicking.

Thank you for your help.
