Early reading

We might not be able to access preschool education, for various reasons, for my DD.

Has anyone got any advice on what I should do with her in terms of early phonics/reading. I don't want her going into reception miles behind the other children. Any resources you could recommend?

Thanks!

Most preschools don't teach phonics

Enjoy looking at books and talking about them with her. Play lots of I Spy using the letter sounds not names. Provide her with opportunities to see her name so that she begins to recognise it.

The letters and sounds document has loots of lovely activities for phase one that concentrate on early literacy skills

Don't even consider doing phase two
Every child is entitled to to pre school education

That's great to hear, that they don't do phonics. No need to panic about that! Reading is easy! I was just worried she would be very far behind if she didn't go.

It will be due to several house moves, and for stability, rather than her not being legally allowed to go!

Lots of stories, lots of rhymes, see if she can retell a story. Acting out stories with puppets. That's more than enough to set her on the right road - and fun for both of you!

TV shows from Cbeebies are good for preschool education. eg. alphablocks , peppa pig. and montessori teaching aid will also facilitates the skills of child including maths, science, languages and so on.

Read to her lots, books, magazines, anything/ point out signs while you're out and about (shops, road signs etc)/ sing songs/ play I spy/ write her name on all her belongings so she can recognise it/ provide lots of opportunities for mark making/ label objects around the house. Most early years settings won't do any formal phonics as such apart from phase one letters and sounds which is mostly playing games to encourage listening skills and sound recognition. Personal care, physical and social/ emotional development are much more important for starting school.

The preschool my littles went to do phonics.

Eldest left for reception in September. Then youngest started same preschool that September... so they got rid of one and got the other haha!

But they come home with new stickers weekly. Also have phonic sheets at the door of the sounds they're using now.

I'm not sure what to suggest that would help, but try The Works. They have a lot of good work books that may have something!
