What is he entitled too?

hi My DS will be 3 soon and I have heard that he would then be entitled to free nursery sessions - how do I find out what he is entitled to and does he still get it if he is with a childminder or in a day nursery?

at 3 they are entitled to 5 x 2 1/2 hour sessions a week. Not sure if you can get them for a childminder but the day nursery should be OK. If you ask them they should be able to tell you more.

He should be entitled to the 5 sessions that Furball mentions from the term after his 3rd birthday. So if your ds will be 3 before the start of the January term the nursery will be able to apply for funding for him from January. If his birthday is after the January term starts then he will be entitled to the funding from the term that starts just after Easter.

On headcount day the nursery staff will give you a form to sign. You will probably also need to take ds' birth certificate and proof of your address. HTH.

Thanks for that but it seem that every nursery charges different amounts so how does it work is is 5 x 2.5 hours no matter what the Nursery is..... this is what completely confuses me!

The Government pays £7.80 (actually I think it's just gone up to £8-something) per 2.5hr session for a maximum of 5 sessions a week.

Nurseries/pre-schools will have an hourly rate that they charge children under 3.

If the nursery you choose charges the same hourly rate as the government grant for 2.5hrs then your DC will be able to go entirely free of charge from the term after his 3rd birthday.

If the nursery does 3 hour sessions then it will charge you for the extra 1/2 hour that the government does not fund.

Nurseries/pre-schools are also able to charge for extras such as lunch clubs.

Just ask each nursery when you go to look round!

Not all nurseries will allow you to have the free sessions with them. DD1 went to 1 nursery which was a private nursery and we still had to pay for, so probably worth checking with the nursery. We moved her into the local village one and they did.
