cultural clothes day - english/irish heritage

one of those very well meant but utterly irritating "events"...

dd's ordinary clothes are her cultural clothes fhs!

but obv that will not cut it!

i'd thought of medieval queen (no doubt will be very unoriginal and anyway queens are not culturally specific to the british isles) or leprechaun (but absolutely cannot, cannot, cannot bear that "oirish" nonsense)...

ideas gratefully received - must be very, very easy to make or acquire!

thanks so much in advance

Can you not blag one of those pretty traditional Irish dancing dresses from extended family for her bk? I bet she'd look jolly cute (and the answer is no, I'm afraid we don't )

Marina · 02/10/2006 15:59

Or top to toe Boden of course

bossykate · 02/10/2006 16:12

lol at top to toe boden! would be just right for her rather poshly parented clapham nursery! i could call it her tribal costume lol!

already though of irish dancing dress. unfortunately no cousins/friends to borrow one from. if they would lend it because i looked on ebay for a 2nd hand one and they are anywhere from £350 - £550 a go!

I hate these things too. Honestly do they think we have nothing better to do?

Ok shave off the top of her head, cut a whole in an old blanket and put it over her head, tie rope around her waist and she goes as a Celtic monk and stands on one leg all day?

Still mulling it over, not feeling inspired TBH

SpookyQuootiepie · 02/10/2006 16:16

borrow irish dancing dress and shoes

SSSandy · 02/10/2006 16:17

a HOLE that is not a Whole

KTeepee · 02/10/2006 16:37

We had to do something similar once (Irish that is) - did contemplate trying to borrow an Aran jumper but ended up sending ds in wearing a Gaelic Games strip from our home county. They wouldn't let him bring the hurley as well, though!

bossykate · 02/10/2006 18:24

thanks so much for the ideas so far - although i don't think i'll be giving dd a tonsure any time soon . any more please?

What do they mean by cultural clothes - national dress? There isn't really any English national dress, is there, beyond maybe what Morris dancers wear? Don't know if you could get away with wrapping a tartan blanket round her waist and pinning it over one shoulder as an (Irish) kilt?

Can she go as a figure from legend/history? It still involves a lot of work though.

dabihp · 02/10/2006 19:18

english national dress... uhm.. legging, denim skirt over, white (shoes)stilletos,,inappropriate tshirt... fake burberry handbag??

irish... uhm... send her in rags with a mouldy potato! lol

chipmonkey · 02/10/2006 20:05

was wondering when the mouldy potato would make an appearance!

Blu · 02/10/2006 20:14

PMSL. (Sorry, not helpful, but I can't help myself!)

Ahem - if you get desparate and have to concede to the Oirish look, we do have a Peter Pan costume that could very easily be accessorised as a leprachaun.

Or the Brixton Cultual Look? that would be a novelty in Clapham, surely? Start with the thing, any amount of bling.....

chipmonkey · 02/10/2006 20:17

How about the Shinrone? A cowboy hat and loads of old clothes should do it!

chipmonkey · 02/10/2006 20:17

And she could hold a mouldy potato in her hand!

Blu · 02/10/2006 20:17

Boudeccia?
Lady Godiva!! That would be easy enough!
Queen of Hearts (with some jam tarts)
Little Miss Muffet / pastoral sheperdess look....

How much notice have they given you for this ridiculous task?

lexiemum · 02/10/2006 20:59

the fine lady from ride a cock horse to banbury cross complete with hobby horse

welsh national dress (long dress, apron and pointy hat , i think)

beefeater

a service uniform (army, navy et al)

puffball skirt from the 80's or flares from the 70's

Blu · 03/10/2006 10:16

No connection with your family, but we do have a real scottish kilt that would fit your dd, I think.

SSSandy · 04/10/2006 08:27

This is stretching it a bit I know but Viking look (Ireland, the Viking settlements).

Take a cap like a simple cotton pull on thing (like the ones you get for a couple of pounds at H & M or C& A) and attach horns to it (maybe adapted from toilet rolls squashed at the top and covered in foil so it doesn't look grotty). Then all she needs is a sword and a shield (big paper plate or one of those big round foil plates would do).She could have a cloak if you have something you can use for that. TBH even a towel would do.

bossykate · 04/10/2006 13:02

thank you very much for all the ideas. i think i will go with blu's queen of hearts idea as we already have a crown and the rest of the costume (and tarts) will be very simple indeed!

thank you so much everyone
