uses pencils but like to just felt pens and biros too is just trying to form letter and make more controlled movements with with pens/ pencils his choice not mine. biros often smudge and felt pens certainly do. dh = lh commented that he felt that someone should design pens for left handers ( obviously someone already has). ds really struggle with paper sissors and is still only able to cut one attempt in 5. dd is only a year older so copying is really important for him at this stage. I am not planning to get him left handed everything but it would be nice for him to to have pens that he can uses that wont smudge all the time etc or pencils that it is not hugely uncomfortable to hold. even simple things like tying laces is quite complex for me show him.

... no am now showing how to tie laces yet. but want to practice do it myself with left hand so that when we are tying his laces I can tie them in a left handed manner. Have never bothered much about the left handed thing until now really, and its mainly because of dhs frustrations at school.

Then I guess a non-smudge pen would be good. But beofre buying a pen with a fancy grip, I would chat to his teacher. I wonder if learning to write with a left handed grip pen might mean he has difficulty using standard ones later on. And we lefties live in a right handed world, and need to know how to use what's out there.

It was basically a lined mat and the there would be letters written on it, with little arrows showing us which way to trace the letters, it was meant to teach us to write with a pen. We were meant to put a piece of paper on top of the mat and trace the letters underneath.....

ooh fuzzy wuzzy that sounds like it would make a good christmas present for him. beckybs had a quick word with preschool this morning and was told they really did not encourage the curled arm approached. said they have a left handed teacher in year two but thats someway away for ds and I want him to know that it is the most natural thing in the world to be lh and needs to do things a bit diffrently from time to time. you know what kids are like for being the same. I have never ever occured to me that letter formation would be different i just thought you just had to contort to write.

Letter formation is the same in both l/r handeders (I think), it's how the paper is placed that's different. But I think I wrtie differently forom a lot of l/h I've met they tend to curl their hands around the pen I don't do that...

beckybrastraps · 07/09/2006 14:20

Neither do I. I would certainly encourage the pushing rather than pulling.

magicfarawaytree · 07/09/2006 14:21

am struggle to visualise what you mean about paper placement. will try to look to see what you mean. Beckybs said she didnt do the curled arm thing either. she pushes the pen rather than pulls it.

I bet there are some other left handers in his class.

I rather like being left handed .

magicfarawaytree · 07/09/2006 14:27

one other little boy is lh in his class.

dont ask me why but I always wanted to be left handed - used to practice for ages when i ws younger writing with my left hand.

i am rh and dh is lh, so hopefully dd will be lh and all these mundane tasks will fall to him.
how do you flip the mouse over to lh, though? i don't think dh knows about that, he uses his rh. he uses rh scissors, as well. the only thing he really uses is his lh bread knife... his sandwiches were hilarious before we got that.

beckybrastraps · 07/09/2006 14:51

Go to the control panel. Mouse properties. Flip button. Easy peasy!

magicfarawaytree - that's why you're all excited now

magicfarawaytree · 07/09/2006 15:52

It must be - I get to be left handed by proxy yipeeeee

Have you tried this place:

Anything Left Handed

my DS writes left-handed, and as a baby did everything first with his left hand, but is increasingly ambidextrous. I am so right handed I found it hard to show him how to form letters properly, so some of the handwriting aids really helped me (he didn't notice, of course!)

exbury · 18/09/2006 15:00

whoops - just read to the bottom of the thread and realised someone had already recommended the same place
