Manderin chinese speaking mums in north London

CinnabarHill · 19/05/2012 23:06

I'm a mother of two girls aged 7 months and 4 years old respectively. My older daughter speaks fluent manderin Chinese and I'm very keen to get to know mums with children of similar age so that they can play together. Do anybody know if there is a chinese playgroup in north London? Also would love to meet mums with younger babies too!

Hi, my name is Candy and I am originally from Hong Kong.
I am a qualified primary school teacher (currently working as a subject co-ordinator) and mother of a 2-and-a half-year-old toddler.
I've started a Mandarin Chinese Playgroup in the Harrow area, in early July.
Who is interested in joining this group, please get in touch by emailing me at [email protected]
I already have the experience of teaching in a Cantonese Playgroup in Central London for a couple of years.

Next session:

Date: 17 August 2013 (Saturday)
Time: 10.30am to 11.30am
Venue: 28 Downs Avenue, Pinner HA5 5AH
Theme: numbers
What to expect: singing some Mandarin songs, playing a game, doing an arts and crafts activity, reading a story, chit-chatting!
Fee: free or charge.

It's a very interesting idea! I am a Mandarin teacher base in Canterbury, I teach children and adults Mandarin speaking as well as Chinese culture. If some mums can host this kind of Mandarin weekend group day, I am keen to go to the group and show children how to speak, write, and read per various method, like games and toys.

Hi Minimimimi
I also live in southgate and have two young sons with similar age to yours. I was considerng setting up one chinese play group sometime ago for the same reason as yours, with the possibility of extending to a chinese class for little one. Would be nice if we can have the chance to chat more. What time is the play group at H+H? My email is [email protected]

Is this thread still active?! hope so! I was here a long time ago looking for a Taiwanese/Mandarin children playgroup but since I returned to work, it's been so difficult to get in touch (let alone starting my own group...) I live in New Southgate (N11) and I'd love to be involved. My daughter is just over 1 1/2 and I am Taiwanese myself. My partner isn't so it's a bit difficult to keep up speaking Mandarin at home. Anyway, if anyone is still checking this thread, please email me on [email protected]! I don't work on Fridays so I'd love to know if there are any gatherings on Fridays!

Hi,
Good to know that someone is looking for Mandarin playgroup as well. I was struggling quiet a while after my girl was born. She is 14 months now. I am glad that I joined the Hua Hsia Chinese School two weeks ago for the Autumn term. There are 8 babies in our group and very friendly mums. We stay 50 mins very Saturday to learn Chinese songs and simple words. My daughter does enjoy it! I would suggest that you can book a trial lesson first to see if it is really what you need.

Good news! A free Mandarin stay and play is starting at Archway Children's Centre. If you live in Islington and your child is under 5 years old, you can join the play group. It runs between 1.30pm to 3pm every Friday from November 8th.
Here is the information about the Archway Children's Centre: www.islington.gov.uk/services/children-families/familyinformationservice/childrenscentres/centres_islington/Pages/archway.aspx

Can anyone recommend / know where I could locate any mandarin speaking childcare minders in the N1/Islington area?

Also - if anyone has any plans / would like to set up a Mandarin playgroup in the neighbourhood please let me know....

I grew up speaking another Chinese dialect (Teo-Chew) and my Mandarin is rusty at best, but would like to expose my daughter to the language from an early age...

Thx!

Hi everyone, we live in child hill area NW2 with two kids age 7 and 4. We had check out both weekend Taiwanese Chinese school and decided to sent them, to London Overseas Chinese School in Colindale Nw9, and had been very impressed with the standard. It may not be a fancy school but the fees is relatively cheap @£150 per year compare to £150 per term in the other one. The school also offers both traditional and simplified Chinese character classes.

For young toddlers, we can also recommend Camden Chinese Nursery at Camden Town. Although it is run by aunties from HongKong, both my children have managed to pick up Cantonese and English at school while they speak Mandarin to each others at home.

If you need more info, feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Just wanted everyone to know that we have a new, free Mandarin group running at Shepherd's Bush Library, right beside Westfield London. We'll be getting together on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of every month to sing songs, read stories and play games, all in Mandarin. Have a look at the calendar on www.playcantonese.com or email [email protected] for more details.

Hi, I am a mother of an 8 year-old boy. I am a basic Mandarin speaker and I am currently attending a Mandarin language course with Cactus in King’s Cross. Very well organised with competent teachers. I would like to expose my DS to the language from an early age and I saw they have started offering courses for children in Islington!

Just wanted to revive this thread as I am looking for a Mandarin/Cantonese playgroup in North London, near Highgate/Hampstead area would be great! I have a 6 month old boy whom I would love to get him some exposure to Chinese whilst I have the time during my mat leave.

I have seen from previous threads of people possibly setting up one but I can't seem to find any information about this on google searches. The information about Archway CC having a Mandarin playgroup is also outdated as there isn't one there anymore.

If anyone has anymore information or would like to meet up my email is [email protected].

Thanks!

I go to this one in East London but they have a North London campus as well:
www.yuhuachineseschool.org.uk
"Immersive playgroup exposes babies and toddlers to mandarin in a natural way through music, movement, sensorial activities, puppets and storytelling. Mandarin nursery rhymes and songs make their ears familiar with Mandarin tones and build up their vocabulary.

£10 / 45 mins / session"
The North London campus is in Kentish Town
