How much "Academic" stuff does your child's school-attached pre-school do?

Now, before anyone rambles on about the EYFS being all about learning through play - I know that. What I mean is does your pre-school do phonics sessions with the children, or certainly the older ones? Do they ask them to write their name? Do they basically ramp up the academic side prior to a child joining reception or is it very child-led? P.s state schools. Just curious.

Our pre-school encourages the children to recognise their name. They have letters to play with, but they do not teach phonics - our school's HT forbids it, and I agree on that point.

Our school is very good, however I do have issues with the pre-school that is attached. I do not think children are stimulated enough there. To me it seems they don't want a mess as it has to be tidied and that cuts into their lunch break.

My Dd's state attached preschool expected them to learn to recognise then trace, then write their name. They do some phonics sessions and teachers have been trained to teach phonics using the same system as the rest of her school.
DD is now one of the older children - she starts Reception in Jan.
When they realised that she liked phonics and needed a bit more than the Reception was doing they started sending her up to the Reception class for a daily session, and they also borrow her reading books from there. She does reading with them three times a week individually.
So I think the answer is yes, they do, but only when the kids are ready. There are other January starters who aren't doing this, and I presume it was the same for the older kids who started in Sept - depends on the child.
The rest of the time DD spends in the home corner -she loves it there!

I am a Pre-School leader and i plan for one child each day and make sure that every child is meeting their individual learning goals i also plan activities around the room to include all the children. (They are also adaptable for children with special educational needs). We include jolly phonics and encourage learning opportunities wherever possible.
Your children's learning Journey will clearly show you how your child is progressing.
(These are OFSTED requirements apart from the Jolly phonics so EVERY pre-school should be doing the same)
