Preschool swimming lessons - advice please

My DS (4.8, just missed the cut off for proper school this year, so preschool still) has been swimming in a Group Level 1 class once a week for 30 minutes since February.

When we joined, we were told that as he was quite a bit older than some of the others (they usually start at 3) he would probably move up a level quite quickly.

The class started at 4 pupils. I am sure we were told the max was 6 pupils in the group, but for the last 3 weeks there have been 7 pupils. And the bits they are doing seem to be getting easier.

He seemed to be really confident from the start - not worried about water splashing on his face, etc. And really enjoyed it. By late March he seemed to be able to do most (about 75%) of what they expected to graduate from Level 1 to Level 2. But the stuff they are doing now seems to be getting easier. They are often in a class not even trying the bits he still needs to do to progress, and with the 1:7 ratio (which I am sure we were told would be less than this) just nothing seems to improve from week to week.

However, on the positive side, he has been nightmarish in group classes in the past, and I am actually really proud of the way he is confidently taking part in this group, and doing what the teacher says, etc... But he just seems to be being a bit short-changed on the actual swimming bits.

Any advice anyone?

Is he enjoying it? I would presume so what so you want him to do swim 50 metres front crawl? It may look like play but it's all building skills and confidence and you won't see a massive change from one week to the next. My SIL is a swimming teacher and she gets so frustrated with parents who want instant results and for very young children to be doing profficient stokes in all styles straight away. How come you think you know better then the qualified teacher? Have you spoken to the teacher about his progress? And just because he's older does not automatically mean he will be better faster.
