What sort of counting games can I play with my three yr old?

She has a pile of pennies that we've been counting up to twenty with, but she's bored of that now.

What sort of things could I do with her?

With my 3 year old, I'll just do it as part of play. I might ask how many pieces of train track he's put on, or how many butterflies on a page of a book etc. Don't make a particular thing of it, it's just part of the conversation.

Board games can be fun, he has "bus stop game" (suspect amazon/ebay would find it under that name) where there's a certain amount of counting involved. Simple snakes and ladders work once they've got the idea too.
He loves counting, and has done from an early age, so he's always happy to do it.

A few months ago he counted up to 29, then paused as he didn't know the next number. He then anounced "Bumpty" in a satisfied voice. Then we had "Bumpty-one, bumpty-two..."

Same as DeWe, we could steps, pictures in books, draw pictures of monsters with 10 legs. We count if we're baking, it's just part of everything we do.

Count the stairs as you go up/down.

Count the cars as they go past.

Count slices of carrot/grapes/raisins/chocolate buttons (whatever) on the plate.

Count each push on the swing.

Count buttons as you do them up/undo them.

Count fingers as you wash them.

Endless possibilities .....

I do all those sort of things. I meant with the pennies Grin

She wanted to do more games with the coins and after counting them I was out of ideas!

How about making a play shop? You could write labels for prices (up to 20p I guess) and attach them to toys/play food etc. Then DD can count out the right number of pennies from her purse to pay you (the friendly shopkeeper)

Then you swap, and as the shopkeeper your DD has to make sure you count out the right number of pennies - you could make the odd 'mistake' to she if she tells you off :)

Great idea! Thanks Freudian Smile

Thanks Blush only thought of it as you specified pennies - I should actually try it with my own 3yo :o
