How should I broach this with otherwise great pre-school?

My DS is 4.4. He's a September baby so is one of the oldest at his pre-school and won't start 'big' school until this September.

He's been at a great pre-school for 2 years now - he's been really happy there and it deservedly got Outstanding on its Ofsted.

Since going back this January though he's been getting upset when I take him. After quizzing him it seems he is bored of 'playing with the same old toys'. I asked his teacher how he is when I'm gone and she says he's fine.

He knows all his letters, can read 2 and 3 letter words, do basic sums and write his name and simple words. I don't want to push him too far on this as he'll be doing that at school but do you think I should suggest they push him more at pre-school so he's a bit more stimulated? I don't want to come across as pushy or critical of their methods so am unsure how to broach it with them. Any ideas?

Hi - I help manage a pre-school and see this happen with the older children at times. It sounds as if he's doing really well and doesn't need more stimulation. If he settles well after you have gone it might be a bit of a "game" he is going through or a "show of protest", seeing how you react and knowing that it will gain the attention of staff and you when it is time for you to go, he is persevering with the game. It usually passes - the trick I think is to be consistent every time you separate from him, say goodbye and that you'll see him later, without fussing when he begins to start to cry. And then go! It is important that he feels secure enough to know that you can leave him without both of you getting anxious and I'm sure that this phase is causing you tremendous anxiety, which he is probably sensitive to and perhaps playing to a little bit. Lots of cuddles when you return (bribes/rewards not such a good idea) and I'm sure it will pass. My daughter went through a massive phase of doing this but it did pass (I know it seems like it is going on forever). Just keep consistent, don't hover and he'll settle back in soon I am sure.
