Hi i am working in a preschool under the eyfs rules... I am struggling to agree with all that we cannot do now. for example we should not have any interatiin in the art and crafts area. only blank paper should be available for them to make their own markings. stencils to colour in have hurt no one. as a parent and nursery nurse i feel too many people are stopping good work in these settings... rules upon rules are being made and i feel are just not needed. being told just how to do a display of childrens work is crazy. i love to see fun work. so be it that a farm has been created and on the wall... it looks inviting.
and children to know why they get a sticker for. even as early as 2 years. Confused

Don't pay too much attention to extreme interpretations of the new ideas of childcare. On the whole just be sensible and go with the spirit of the EYFS. Be child led, help them learn through play, be partly child initiated and partly adult initiated, get outside a lot, provide the continuous provision, give children real choices and input and give lots of variety. It's more important to be a good nursery nurse than try to obey each theory to the letter.

I always provide lots of blank/open ended stuff for the craft area, but also some colouring sheets to do with the current topic/interests in the nursery. I might put a star on a stick to make a wand and leave it in the craft bit and maybe some children will make their own if they want. I suggest things but don't tell them.
Getting the children to help make a farm scene picture may not be creative for them, but it is following instructions and the finished picture will be educational in the same way that posters are.

If one expert tells you that you must do something one way, the next expert will probably tell you to do the same thing a different way. Do it the way the children would want you to do it.
