dd is 3.1 and starts school nursery sept.
she has never been left at any childcare, she happily goes with her grandparents for days out but apart from that she is always with me and dp.
she hates large groups and lots of noise makes her cover her ears.
she lets other children take everything off her.
she wont answer questions like whats your name despite being a good talker at home.
she has told me she is a bit worried about going to nursery.

i have bought her uniform and told her what a big girl she is and how she will make lots of friends and all big 3 year olds go to nursery but secretly i feel like wrapping her in cotton wool and keeping her home with me (forever Blush)

dont know who is more nervous, me or her.

am i the only softy who feels like this?

burning, hope he goes in a bit happier tomorrow Smile
dd had a little brave face on this morning and i was fighting back the tears, pregnancy hormones not helping me there Blush
she seems to be enjoyin herself but doesnt know any childrens names after 2 days? all she says is the teacher read to her, the teacher played with her so i think she may be tailing the teacher a bit but she did wave to a little girl walking out.
dd is 3.2, they seem so young.

I know, ds is is 3.2 too. Some of the others are nearly 4 and writting their names etc. It frustrating when they come out and you're like who did you play with? what did you do? etc and it's like pulling teeth.. We need answers!I wasn't expecting to feel so drained emotionally!

im trying not to ask dd too many questions, but at home she has asked to do painting, playdoh, and chalking so im getting an idea what she is enjoying. Grin

Familyfun, I'm glad she sounds like she's settling in a bit. My DD has been ok (touch wood), I think because they have a lovely slide in the main hall which is far more exciting than me so she just runs off. I don't think she knows any of the other children's names but from what I've seen most of them are playing on their own as they are all a bit little. DD is really tired too and cranky and wants to be carried everywhere later in the day- I think she is worn out at nursery but refuses to sleep in the afternoons now. Haven't been told to shut my mouth yet, but am sure it won't be long! Good luck for next week.

thought dd might be upset going to nursery today after a weekend at home, but she went in happily and the teacher asked her to look after a girl who was crying so she went and sat by her Smile, no tears and ive just donw some leaflet delivery and my internet shop and got half hour till pick up Smile

My DS1 who is 3.1 has just started nursery, I cried every night during his first week because I felt so sad about him going, I have never left him with anyone before.

He appears to really enjoy it, but seems so little compaired to some of the other childen, some of them are age four.

Today one of the assistant teachers told me she had to bang on the table to get him to acknowledge her, Hmm which I am a little miffed about especially as he has come home with a red blotchy face and a cold, so probably wasn't his usual self. And she told me to get his ears checked! It's only been a week and a bit but now I am thinking about whether I am doing the right thing in sending him at such a young age.

familyfun · 22/09/2010 20:50

kaekae, thats awful, poor little thing.
i hated sending dd as i worried she was too young but she is loving it, comes out beaming and says the teacher hugs her and is lovely Smile
personally id give it a chance but if dd was unhappy and i felt it wasnt in her best interests to go id have kept her home till reception. i dont need her to go, i only send her as i think its doing her good learning to mix and get her ready for reception next year.
hope he feels better soon and the teacher is a bit nicer.
dd has a cold too and is grumpy by bedtime.

dd's regular teacher wasnt there today but the teaching assistant was and she went in ok. after school she told me she had cried, cant get her to tell me much, she says she cant tell me, but something about a boy flushing the toilet and shouting he wont play with her anymore Sad
i know kids argue and stuff will happen, what makes me sad is dd is crying and i have no idea what has happened.
she says she wasnt naughty.
she says boy was horrid.
think they are all tired and grumpy by friday, i know i am Smile

I work in a pre school, why not ask your ds keyworker if she can jot down a quick observation for you of where your ds spends his time if you are worried that hes just sitting. You should find that when younger some spend quite a lot of time at one activity ,in my nursery its the playdough table, but then the staff encourage him to join them at other activities ,as your child becomes more confident he will chose his own activities. On the question of children crying if you are upset then our parents stay outside until we tell them that their child has settled [usually with a thumbs up]they do usually stop crying very quickly and once their carer has poked their head round the door[not letting their child see them] and seen their child is not crying anymore they can go home hopefully a lot happier to leave

My 14 month old has been at nursery for a couple of months now. At first there were tears which we were told went away soon after we left, but now he loves it. He runs in and plays with the others as soon as he gets there, and is excited to go. Fortunately he still loves us, loves to be picked up by us at the end of the day, and loves to play with us when he's not at nursery. He goes 3.5 days a week.

The nursery we use does give good feedback as to what he's been doing and how he gets on. We had a parents' evening last night - something I remember being a horror for any child! They had photos of the kinds of things he's been doing, also examples of his very early artwork (very abstract art at this stage, probably sell for millions in the right gallery! :-)

We're happy he went. He's had great chance to socialise with other children his age and gains a wider range of experiences which must help.
