Preppers

Preppers are being hysterical and scaremongering

Who else is fed up with hearing this, and has it changed your perspective on plans as a result?

I'm sick to the back teeth of the mockery and incompetence of some people. The piss takers. The ones who make out they can't work out what could possibly happen and deliberately refuse to listen to explanations. The ones who are completely clueless and have no idea what you might need. The ones who think 'they' (the government) will provide everything or not let anything happen.

Where I would have liked to help others, (and I still will if they haven't had the ability to increase their resilience) I am now feeling far more that it's me and mine first.

I just wish people would wise the fuck up,grow a pair, and stop bleating!

Anyone else?

I love all these beardy blokes being interviewed on telly in lumberjack shirts and/or fisherman’s gilets breaking the first rule of being a prepper 🤣

Why, what’s the first rule? - ignore me I just realised.

I thought the lumberjack shirt was relevant!

bellinisurge · Yesterday 12:07

@Dreadingtheday the first rule is don’t tell anyone you are a prepper

bellinisurge · Yesterday 12:09

@Dreadingtheday🤣🤣🤣 beat me to it. To be honest, the clothing and personal non-grooming choices are also a give away

Some are ignoring the fact that a power cut for days is the most likely issue. So those saying they are going to keep their kettle in the bedroom are not prepared for no electricity!

I don't know how formula fed babies will manage, as I don't have any kids, but I'd imagine there are made up bottles available, and that would be what I'd do if I had a baby in the house. Not sure of the expiry length on them though.

You can make up formula with cold bottled water. It just has to be used within an hour.

Ah good, as I said I'm not a mum! When I think about it, it's the little ones and the elderly/ill that are quite vulnerable aren't they? I'm ancient myself but have a little prep box!

MrsPernicious · Yesterday 12:21

I think the fire brigade may find themselves unusually busy during the next power cut.

Have others noticed that most the panicers don't seem to be concerned about basic stuff like going to work during whatever the next glitch to the system is?

I’ve been trying to figure this out and I think it’s because people take so much for granted
They don’t think about how water gas electricity actually happens. They just assume it’s there.

My job is impossible with no electric, as are many others. I'm assuming no pay if I can't work. Maybe I need to prep financially too.
And presumably schools will close again

@bellinisurge
But I'd love one of those beardy blokes ( or a lady I watch) to be in my MAG!
DH is pretty handy tho

I wouldn’t describe myself as a prepper - I’m very much unprepared! But I’m unnerved by the future and I’m now trying to be more mindful of having a stock of food and bottled water.

It’s much easier for people psychologically to label preppers as hysterical rather than the alternative which is that climate emergency / cyber attacks are coming. It’s a coping mechanism

Agree. It's a defence mechanism. If you don't think about it, it won't happen. It's easy to mock people who think differently too.

I've been quietly prepping my in-laws with practical Christmas presents!

I bought a spare lantern for my elderly neighbour in case. Don't want him setting the nextdoor flat on fire with candles.

I remember thinking three days of food was a lot to get sorted and buy, but in reality it's not too difficult if someone gives you ideas and a starting point.

Hoping that it will become the norm here like a lot of countries on the continent.

FindingMeno · Yesterday 18:25

I also wonder if it illustrates which people are a bit spoilt and never had a days discomfort in their lives.
Perhaps to be a prepper you need to be a country dweller, or a camper, or ex military, or such like to know how sometimes you have to rough it a bit!

Yep, I have three front line workers who need kicking out the door - bright eyed, bushy tailed and with happy tummies.

Chaostheory12 · Yesterday 20:59

Okay I have largely ignored all this but now I'm thinking I need to take it seriously. What do I need?

MrsPernicious · Yesterday 20:59

At some point we need to have a chat about Darwinism and natural selection.

A larder cupboard with food you will eat cold at a pinch but not have to throw away if you area is fine.
Nine tins of beans will do, but you probably have better ideas.
A few bottles of water.
A torch
A radio
Enough bedding warm clothes to survive if your heating conks out.
GSOH, you might hit some glitches this winter - you might not. There is no need to be more than about £20 out of pocket
Some sort of contact with neighbours

Daffodilsearch · Yesterday 21:36

I've come to the conclusion that you do what's right for you and the occupants of your home. I'm likely to do more as I know what it's like to be without water for 18 days, supermarket closed due to village flooding, then when opened it was literally emptied by people that hadn't been prepared.
