@Pineneedlesincarpet SARs?

rosycheex · 28/03/2026 05:30

My Charlotte potatoes are delicious -so much nicer than bought. People actually comment on the flavour so it can be worth growing everyday veg.

@Pineneedlesincarpet SARs?

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was a viral respiratory illness that caused a global outbreak in 2002–2003. It was caused by the SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV-1) and was the first major emerging infectious disease pandemic of the 21st century.

That's what AI says. It was also my first go at prepping and the amount of tins of canneloni beans and stew I bought was amazing. Still got them obviously. Chucked the dried milk powder away as fast as possible though.

Given global yields will be down, due to lack of fertilisers, I think it would be good to plant potatoes. They are easy to grow in soil.

Tomatoes are easy to grow on a windowsill but need quite a bit of care.

Different plants grow well in different locations, and different weather conditions. Growing a range of things helps.

Don’t buy seeds get them out of food you have already bought!

plant any potatoes/onions which are looking past their best or have started sprouting.

often you don’t need compost an stuff and it will just grow in the ground.

make sure you harvest seeds from stuff that does grow for the following year!

Don’t buy seeds get them out of food you have already bought!

Doesn't work for F1 hybrids.

This is true but many gardeners don’t realise it and are then put off growing veg when they get a poor result. Pack of seeds does me years for most things as I don’t use the full packet in one year. I do have 4 or 5 different tomato varieties, different peas etc.
Well that’s untrue my husband does all the hard work as I am now disabled, but I sow all the indoor seeds and give advice.
It is a great hobby growing veg and the taste of home grown veg including potatoes are loads better than shop bought.

I’ve only got some pots on a balcony - I concentrate on broad beans and peas early on, salads all season, with French beans, tomatoes, and courgettes if I don’t kill them, for later in summer. That works well.

in my small back garden when I was in a house, I had rhubarb, peas/beans going up the fence, courgettes and salads in the bed, cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets, peppers and chilli’s in pots, strawberries in window boxes. You can grow a lot in a small space.

But I think it’s more that food will get more expensive and you may need to rely more on locally grown so seasonal vegetables rather than always having strawberries year round. And I think there will still be enough food, but it may not be as abundant aa now and may get much more expensive.

If you have a garden then consider fruit trees and bushes. We had tons of raspberries last year from half a dozen bushes but also grew figs, pears, cherries, blueberries and grapes. Grapes take 2-3 years before they start to bear fruit but we got about 8 or so bunches in their first fruiting year and they were delicious.

All of these plants have been given to me as birthday/Christmas presents

I've currently got a kiwi plant and pomegranate tree, which have yet to fruit. I think it's a good idea, if you can, to grow fruit that would otherwise be expensive.

We also planted a hedge a few years ago, so now have hazelnuts and sloes too.

Forage for blackberries in the summer and freeze them. I had two huge bags and am still using them up for breakfast.

Neighbours often give away or sell fruit and veg when they have a glut.

I think all new houses with a garden should have a fruit tree as standard. Different ones all along the street so neighbours can swap 😀

fridaleavethetweezers · 06/04/2026 12:37

My road all have one fruit tree in the gardens, we got a walnut. Gluts are put out in a box at the end of the drive. Great idea.

My though exactly!! 😂

Inside: I buy cheap boxes of marrowfat peas from the supermarket, and plant them in the plastic boxes from mushrooms with a few cm of compost in. I snip off the pea shoots at about 10cm. You can get several pickings. Also herbs and salad shoots. I also grow a few chilli plants every year. We eat a lot of chillies.

Our main outside crops are squash and courgettes. Don't use saved seed for those - they cross too easily, and you can get ones that make you ill as a result.

We have a couple of apple trees. This year I shall be doing more blackberry picking to go with them. We also have friends with fruit trees - I still have loads of frozen plums from them. I'm planting more rhubarb this year too.

I've tried growing other things, but the return hasn't been worth the effort.

GoldbergVariations · 13/04/2026 01:23

We have one rhubarb plant I bought in a garden centre years ago. We simply ignore it, and every year it just goes nuts, producing so much fruit!

rosycheex · 16/04/2026 08:19

I’m making rhubarb wine with mine -I did it a few years ago -lovely pale pink wine, fresh taste.
