What does this mean for us in the UK?

Oil prices rising. Possible flight cancellations and redirections as the Middle East becomes a no go zone for commercial airlines. Stock market instability.

Strait of Hormuz potentially closed (have heard it may already be) so that will affect prices of goods that travel through there, primarily oil so that will push prices up. Stock market will be interesting on Monday!

Hello prepper board! I used to have a decent prepping system in place for Brexit, which then unexpectedly came in handy when COVID struck. But I've been blissfully prep-free for several years.

It just occurred to me (having watched the weekend's events in stupefied dismay) that I should be thinking about sorting out supplies of some stuff - imported goods for example.

So I'm just signing up to this thread to see what more experienced preppers are thinking.

@TheElementsSongFood, water, start with the essentials.

The issue with shipping in the Persian Gulf is that it may cause inflation to rise. Rise in fuel costs could mean goods cost more to transport, so manufacturers and retailers increase the price.
Look for local food sources.

Light, power - have torches, powerbanks, USB lights etc.

TheElementsSong · 03/03/2026 11:34

Thank you @nannynick ! We already have water purification tablets, matches, candles, battery-powered lights, powerbanks (which I must remember to keep charged). Also have a decent supply of basic medications but will do an expiry-date inventory later today. Food-wise, I'm going to have to think about building up a bit more in the tinned basics and dried staples categories. Sent DH out to the Asian supermarket yesterday to buy some of the imported foods that we rely on in our household, not buying loads but just a spare bottle of this and packet of that. Most of our fresh food is locally-sourced anyway.

And you're right, I think (unless things really escalate), we'll feel it more in increased prices for everything rather than actual shortages.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/03/2026 19:32

Possibly supply chains disrupted so random shortages of things that are now going the long way round.

I started prepping for Brexit and had a little ‘Brexit cupboard’ which came in handy for Covid like you say.

I’ve kept it up though and always have good supplies of food in and water. I’ve used the water a few times when we were cut off for a day in the summer and also used my camping stove (in a well ventilated area) when the electric was off for 16 hours last winter. Good to be able to have a hot drink!
