Anyone watching Campi Flegrei? (Italian volcano)

Wondering if it erupts, what effects will be here in the UK and if there are any preparations needed.

If you are closer what would you be considering?

Fingers crossed it comes to nothing again.

Oh dear has it erupted?

Middleagedstriker · 16/05/2025 22:18

I'm all for prepping but this is quite weird. Almost like you see it as a game.

NeedForSpeed · 16/05/2025 22:22

Really? I'd be far more worried about the Icelandic activity.

DoNoTakeNo · 16/05/2025 22:25

“Seismic swarm” 150+ quakes - But that was in May 2024.
4.4 quake in March this year, again no sign of an imminent earthquake.
Plenty of time to prep.

It's not a game.

It was the Iceland eruption 15 or so years ago that made me wonder whether this one will effect us. (If it happens at all, it's rumbled before and not erupted) We tend to.get more produce from Italy. (Horse and puffin not being that popular over here) Campi Flegrei has a history of being massive supervolcano to showing signs of an eruption then settling down again for a bit. A wide range of previous history.

I'd better go out and stock up on loo rolls.

Absolute nonsense.

I take it you're aware there have been 8 eruptions in Iceland in the last two years? And another is brewing at the moment with land rise being constantly monitored.

The explosive size of the eruption is not what necessarily leads to the impact on airspace, it's the type and location.

Under water ones lead to more ash, which was the issue with the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010 as it erupted under a glacier.

MissAmbrosia · 17/05/2025 11:53

Is it doing something? I'm going to be in Naples in a couple of weeks....

Amethystanddiamonds · 17/05/2025 12:01

I think the chances of it erupting at the moment are slim. Let's face it, it vents a lot and the crust has cooled significantly since the last eruption 500+ years ago so will need lots of earthquake activity/swarms before it erupts.

Anyway....will go back to pretending I'm not a volcano geek now 😂

MissAmbrosia · 17/05/2025 12:39

In fact flying to Naples next Saturday. And then getting the train to Calabria. Planning a boat trip to Stromboli to hopefully see that one erupting. Should hopefully see Vesuvius and Etna (from a distance) during our 2 weeks. So a volcano fest in fact 😎The big one better behave.

Amethystanddiamonds · 17/05/2025 16:49

@MissAmbrosia that sounds like a great holiday. I really want to go and see Stomboli and Etna. I hope you enjoy it!

BlackeyedSusan · 01/09/2025 12:38

Another earthquake swarm hit last night at a shallower depth. (Less than a km) (Plus a four (ish )under Pozzuoli this morning

Temperatures are rising at Solfatara. (One of the previous craters)

The INGV/volcanologists have said there is a possibility of an phreatic eruption (steam and rocks) or a phreatomagmatic (sp?) eruption up to the size of Monte Nuevo. (How big the possibility is I don't know, but they are quite cautious in predicting eruptions compared to individual volcanologists some of whom are more likely to say there will be an eruption. )

It’s interesting, I agree. Hopefully there are vulcanologists who are on top of the science (if not the physical land) & can advise on manageability of risk to the locals, organisations & tourists.
I do understand your general concern though.
I was stranded, on business, in central Europe for 10 days when Iceland’s volcano blew. I was very fortunate in that all my costs there were covered by work.
As a part-prepper, I was relieved that the necessary consumables were available for my family at home.

(Fortunately for them, most of the UK population of puffins have migrated north, out to sea, for the winter. The horses are safe too cos a vegetarian diet is much easier to prep for!)
