Preppers

not a prepper - but anyone prepping in case of farmers taking action?

Along with fruit & veg crops which will have been affected in Spain, if British farmers start to take actions like those in France & Netherlands (blocking ports etc), then maybe we'll start seeing supply issues.
As I said, I'm not a prepper, I just keep a sort of one out one in type pantry, so any advice welcome (even if that's not to do anything 😀 ).

I don't count myself as a prepper but more of a.. money saving exercise Grin
I basically never pay full price for anything

So peanut butter is say £3, it goes on sale half price. I don't need it but I eat it all the time so I buy some and add to the cupboard
I do that with everything

Currently have a ridiculous amount of toilet rolls due to a tiktok offer, and soap as the chemist had it reduced to 25p for 4 bars
Chemist also reduced mouthguard cleaning tablets to £1 a pack so I bought the lot

It does mean I occasionally have a giant stash of something but it'll all get used and nothing wasted

Same with say a pair of jeans. If you have bought a pair and love them and they get reduced (my aim is 50% off) then buy them

SabrinaThwaite · 10/11/2024 01:52

No?

FusionChefGeoff · 10/11/2024 01:55

My gut instinct would be that the stuff that would be affected would be quite hard to stockpile or prep much eg lettuce / veg?? I suppose I might get a few tins of carrots and I quite like the tinned new potatoes... mmm reckon what the air fryer would make of them?!

Worth thinking about though...

BlackeyedSusan · 10/11/2024 14:26

Compost, pots, windowsill, seeds...

All of which I have got but not the spare time to sort them all out.

I would order the seeds now before there are shortages and grow indoors, in pots outside come spring, or in your garden if you have one.

Hidingthegoodchocolate · 10/11/2024 14:32

Have to admit I bought extra yeast, bread flour, and frozen veg today. Oh and butter which I'll also freeze.

I didn't buy huge amounts extra - just enough to cover a slowdown in supply, rather than a cut-off.

WinteringWellies · 10/11/2024 19:08

I came here especially because of the farmers protest thinking you’d all know what I should be stocking up on. I thought this topic would be heaving, I’m very disappointed 😆

So frozen/tinned fruit and veg, and maybe trying my luck a growing a bit of lettuce on the windowsill, anything else?

BlackeyedSusan · 11/11/2024 02:05

We had loads of info in the Brexit prep threads and the COVID threads. It's gone quiet again since then!

nannynick · 11/11/2024 08:11

Farmers could stop working, leave crops in fields, in storage etc. They could block roads but police may intervene with that but farmers cannot be made to work.

So how quickly could food supply reduce if none came from UK farms? If ports are blockaded, delays occur to imported food.

It's a risk, so yes, for non-perishable things, when buying one, buy two. Don't buy 10, but do prepare a bit, so you have some on hand if SHTF.

There is no way you can grow enough vegetables to be self sufficient with window boxes!

BlackeyedSusan · 11/11/2024 08:23

No of course not. But it supplements. If you can't get hold of salad veg you can have a little of your own.

No?

Only you will know! You may be able to find out by looking in your cupboards.

cookiebee · 11/11/2024 08:33

Oh god, is this thread going to turn out like the Covid ones, complete shortages of certain supermarket goods, but loads of mumsnetters insisting they are not the problem as they simply add an extra pack of pasta to their weekly shop, or a few extra tins. Then the rest having to explain that’s exactly the problem and what causes the issues with stock.

I think having a healthy stocked larder is good anyway, but if there is ever a situation that would stop society all together and bring catastrophic supply issues, then we would be fucked anyway. I personally don’t think that any action farmers would take will be catastrophic to us, we will still have availability of plenty of goods. I certainly do hope that farmers make a stand, I’m sure we would definitely support them.

We actually grow veg in our garden, very the good life, although my loyalty’s are definitely with Margot next door, she was fabulous. But we realised that the cost of growing and all the failures we have would never sustain us, and we have three large vegetable patches.

jaundicedoutlook · 11/11/2024 08:42

No. I can probably manage quite well without anything produced by Jeremy Clarkson...

potatocakesinprogress · 11/11/2024 08:47

They're going to whine for a bit and then they'll stop.

They made their own beds by promoting and voting for Brexit and now they're seeing the consequences. But they'll never blame themselves.

Actually I might start growing my own so I can boycott them. The quality of most of it is rubbish anyway. Did anyone even see a single good strawberry this year

@buffyspikefaith The TikTok loo roll is a 'scam' though as they aren't full rolls. I've done the maths and it's definitely not cheaper! Youve been done I'm afraid

buffyspikefaith · 11/11/2024 09:00

@DexysMidniteRunners it was a branded offer not the cheap half rolls one

Ah OK! I just wanted to highlight the scam that's all. Glad you weren't caught out x

I meant no, as in I’m not prepping.

It’s the Brexit and Covid panic stockpiling all over again.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 11/11/2024 11:47

I like to be prepared at this time of year and buy a few extras and nice Christmas food. Then I do low spend January and save some pennies then. I realise that doesn't actually sound like it saves money as we still eat the same amount! But January is always the poor month so it is nice to spend less then.

Tinned spuds are lovely in the air fryer with a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper.

Obviously not

15 minutes in the air fryer with a wee bit if oil, salt and garlic powder make tinned potatoes into cracking wee roast spuds

This is true - loads voted for Brexit due to red tape. Now the red tape and the attached farming subsidy has been removed. These payments were around £215 a hectare simply for owning land with a few environmental conditions attached such as managing soil or water (which they should have been doing anyway). Some of the bigger farmers were taking in millions from subsidies- now they will only get £7000 and nothing from 2028.

Gravy train has ended though I do feel for some of the hill farmers who gave to scrape a living and who are mostly tenants.

Spacecrispsnack · 11/11/2024 13:44

Very few farmers I know voted for Brexit, and the consequence of ending subsidy will be higher prices and less food security. Whoop. If people really understood how fragile our food supply was no one would sleep well at night!

Guess it depends where you live. Nearly every field had Brexit signs round here and it was a 60/40 split pro leaving.
