Without a shadow of a doubt the most useful bit of “shiny kit” I own was my Letherman PS4 squirt. I have a very old original full-size Leatherman that I have used for years, but the PS4 was just the right size to hang on my keys without being noticed. Sadly, last summer it died, but Leatherman have a very good warranty service, so I was not too concerned. However, they no longer make the PS4, and they replaced it with the next size up. While I like this new multy-tool it is too far too large for key ring carry.

Next, I bought a Gerber vice, just don’t go there.

I friend recommended the SOG PowerPint. Sadly, this is also just too big for key ring carry but is perfect to drop in my pocket. In fact, I think I have carried it just about every day for the last 3 months, both on and off duty. It has a nice selection of tool, and you can grip a screwdriver bit with it for extra reach.

The only downside is the very small blade is a locking blade so would be a problem for UK carry unless you have good reason.

Over all though if your in the market for multy-tool that can be dropped in a pocket or bag without being noticed, but cover all those little job you did not know how you managed before you bought it, I can highly recommend the SOG PowerPint.

I had the Victorinox Rally Swiss Army Knife as a mini knife for a couple of years and it was my absolute favourite for an every day carry with a small blade which is legal and has maximum usefulness. I bought it at the same time as my replacement big Swiss Army Knife (as I lost my first somewhere after many years).

While the big one was the one I was most excited about getting (and spent the most time choosing), it was the Rally that got the most use day-to-day because it was so easy to carry everywhere, was always in my bag or handy for the garden, and had just the attachments I used most.

I was looking for a replacement because I lost it somewhere and I was going to get another one but I'll look at the PowerPint to compare. Where's the best place to buy? Directly from the manufacturer or elsewhere?

Having said that, I never used the nail file, but the flathead screwdriver on the end of it came in handy a few times. 😂

I'm embarrassed to say I collect the Victorinox SAK 😳

Normally I have a Compact on a lanyard to my torch in my pocket ( I tend to wear hiking trousers so big pockets). The compact has the scissors on it and I am hard pushed to find better scissors than Victorinox.

But, wear the multy-tool comes into its own is the dinky plyers, I never realised how useful plyers are on a daily bases until I broke the PS4. I even retrieved the radio ear bud from an ear with them.

To be honest I can not remember wear I bought it from, I will dig around and try to find out.

My other SAK (99% sure it's a Ranger) has the scissors. They do a decent straight line, which surprised me as the SAK forums led me to think the scissors wouldn't be great.

I may have multiple multitools 😅 although not SAKs. My favourite unbranded multitool is one with a hammer on the end, that's handy and compact. I did have a Leatherman many years ago with the pliers as the main selling feature which sounded great for bike repair but I a) never used any of the other attachments and b) got quite miffed when it just fell in half on my belt while I was at an archaeological dig so I ended up just buying a pair of pliers as I always seem to need a longer nose anyway, and I've yet to see a multitool with long-nose pliers (longnose? Long-nosed? IDK).
