Prepping for 2 week isolation

I got a letter today informing us that our road will be closed for various works - for 10 days. I am going to assume that could be 10 working days so basically 2 weeks. During that time we will not be able to park on the road and there will be only pedestrian access. I am disabled and rely on home deliveries, yet I am weirdly excited by what feels like my prepper's exam!

So right now I am working through lists of what I will need for myself, DP and cat during those 2 weeks (although DP will be away for some of that time). I have 10 days to get ready. I do have tinned and dried foods in stock, but with the 'excitement' of Brexit and Covid over, have slacked off and reduced these to some extent. Realistically I know prepping for a nuclear event or something extreme is probably pointless, so I tend to just think of covering short illness or weather extremes.

If this were your situation, what would you make sure you have in stock in advance? It will likely help to focus my mind and not miss something out, so thanks in advance for any replies!

@CrunchyCarrot How's it going?

Due to start tomorrow - am well stocked up BUT this morning I fell down the stairs spraining my foot badly. Honestly it could have been a lot worse, was very frightening, have never done that before. Luckily neighbours around to help. Am laid up unable to get downstairs but at least DP is here now to cook! (He was out when it happened)

Am so very glad crutches were part of my prepping, was able to get to one near the bottom of the stairs, was a huge help!

My plans of baking bread and so on will have to go on hold, I hope in a few days I can get down to the kitchen! At least I have lots of tinned supplies upstairs. Honestly you wouldn't read about it. 😂

Remind him to bring up the tin opener!

😂Yes, good point! Some cans are ring pull but not all.

Oh no, sorry to hear about your accident . Hope that you are up and about soon and keep us updated on how you are getting on with the road closures and your preps.

@Caspianberg

Silly question, but what is the difference between regular and Greek yogurt?

Caspianberg · 25/09/2023 05:51

@kamboozled - regular is thin and sour.

Caspianberg · 25/09/2023 05:56

@kamboozled - Greek yogurt is named as it was originally made in Greece. In made by straining yogurt through a muslin so you end up with a much thicker creamy product.
’greek style’ isn’t the same as Greek yoghurt as still much thinner.
M and s do a great 10% one, it’s the main one I buy now when back in uk, as many other brands now gone down the 0% route ( and add artificial thickener or similar)

i think it would be sensible to contact whoever is digging up the road and explain your situation!

Well you'd think that would work wouldn't you! My neighbour tried many times unsuccessfully to speak to someone connected to the work. Had to leave messages. Still no reply to any of them. Meanwhile a truck with several workers has arrived and they're all discussing whatever. Oh and now a machine with a drill attached. I will be hobbling to my 'office' at the other end of the house as I think things are about to get noisy.

Sorry to hear about your accident @CrunchyCarrot I hope it eases soon! We had similar trying to get hold of roadworks people when they blocked our road. The workers were charming actually, and would get you out in an emergency I'm sure.
I love that your prepping has come in handy.
I'm a firm believer in expecting unexpected. Go you!! (Though slowly!)

CrunchyCarrot · 27/09/2023 07:55

Well, update time and it does seem like these roadworks are quite half-hearted. Road is effectively 'closed' between 8-4.30 but the workmen don't show up till 9, have a one hour break from 10.30, and finish by 2.30 and clear up a bit for half an hour, leaving by 3 pm! Some residents now bring their cars back into the street for the evening.

The work started at the far end and really in 2 days hasn't progressed far with all the breaks. I can imagine though that once they reach further down the street (which is very narrow) then residents won't be able to bring their cars up if they are beyond the works. Right now, if I ordered something to be delivered say in an evening slot I'd get it OK, and maybe even during the day. Don't need to though, am well stocked up.

I haven't eaten as much due to just resting with this darned sore foot (which is now purple and black!). My cat keeps bringing in mice, clearly he thinks I need feeding up or entertaining or something! Fortunately DP is around to remove! 😂

Haha yes I think he must do! Purely for his own self interest no doubt! 😂

Well after saying they have been 9 a.m. starters for the past 2 days, today they showed up at 8.15 a.m.! Still the amount of time spent walking around, looking at their phones!! Plus now rain coming in with Storm Agnes!

So update: Since the work finishes every day at 2.30 p.m. or earlier, cars can then come back up and down the street so it's not as isolating as I first imagined. Noisy, yes! Road is about 1/5th done and the work was '2 weeks' but the 2 weeks is nearly up so I expect this disruption to last a couple more weeks to be honest.

Since my accident and painful foot I've shelved ideas of making do from tinned veg, I just don't want to be downstairs cooking. My cat curiously watches the red and white cones come and go. Visitors coming today. Joy. 😬

Hope that you survived the visitors @CrunchyCarrot and that you sent them out on shopping errands etc. How are you and your lovely cat getting on and is there any sign of the road works packing up and going?

Redlarge · 06/10/2023 20:15

Get water in. Its horrible when/if they shut it off.

Yes the visitors went pretty well. DP was great and took them out for meals. Wish I could have been more useful! My kitty got a new present from one visitor, a battery-operated flapping fish! 😂He isn't quite sure what to do with it besides whacking it occasionally and looking puzzled. 😂

Yes I do have water.

Well, my neighbour lost her gas a couple of days ago, they cut through the pipe. Some sort of mishap. Anyway she's not too pleased as they need to enter her house to fix things and she doesn't want to take time off work for that.

It does look like they have 'finished' this area, but it's not the whole street, just our end. I must say they've done a good job. But what about the rest of the street, is it not to be done or will be done later or...??? Maybe next week they'll be back, it will clearly be extending the job beyond the original 2 weeks.

I do really need to get to my physiotherapist, my foot is very stiff and uncomfortable, and no matter how many websites I visit with instructions for getting over an injury, I can't be sure those exercises are appropriate for my particular injury. Sigh.
